YOUTH LACROSSE: Beach LAX takes 3rd place at OC Lacrosse Assn.

The Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse middle school girls team captured 3rd place out of 17 teams in the Orange County Lacrosse Association league. In a tight game played on March 1, Beach Cities pulled together in the final minutes to vanquish St. Mary's Middle School "A" team. With about a minute to go and the score tied 6-6, defensive wing Julie Crowell connected on a pass to center Shira Hirsch who scored to put Beach up by a goal. But after the ensuing draw, Beach gave up a defensive foul and St. Mary's leveled the score on a penalty shot. Beach won the next draw and Hirsch passed to Crowell who scored the game winner with 10 seconds left in regulation time.

In the 3d place game, Beach got strong play in goal from Molly Wheeler and great defensive work from Emily Goldenberg and Sophia Aragon. Aragon, Crowell and Hirsch were named to the OCLA all-league team.

Coach Vicki Gradman has built the team over two season into one of the top squads in Orange County, even though the program is only in its second season and had to beat several veteran programs to get to its playoff game. The victory was even more impressive because the Beach team is made up equally of 6th, 7th and 8th graders while St. Mary's "A" and several other teams were mostly 8th graders.

Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse also has a 3-5th grade girls team and a boys 7-8th grade team that are looking for players. No prior experience is needed. Interested players should contact Randy A. Platt, (raplatt@socal.rr.com), for the girls youth team and Glenn Styron (lblaxdaddy@yahoo.com), for the boys team. Registration for the middle school girls team will open in August. Interested players should contact jerry.hirsch@gmail.com

YOUTH BASEBALL: LAYB begins 50th season

Although rain may cause postponement, the Los Al Youth Baseball league is scheduled to officially open its 50th Season — and its new parking lot — this Saturday at its fields.

Since there is no mention of it on the league website -- www.layb.org -- they are probably unaware of the significance

The league, which began as the Rossmoor Little League in 1958, held its first opening day that season with Andy Messersmith (who would go on to pitch for the Dodgers and be instrumental in bringing free agency to professional baseball) striking out 14 batters en route to a 2-0 win.

The league was begun by Rossmoor parents who hadn't even lived in their brand new homes a year. They played their their games on land donated by developer Ross Cortese, at the corner of Montecito and Bradbury (where the current Rossmoor Townhomes are). Among the VIPs in attendance on opening day are former major leaguer (St. Louis browns) and Hollywood Stars player Chuck Stevens, as well as KFOX DJ Gary Fuller, and League President Lee Milligan read a letter of congratulations from U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower.

The team sponsors for that first season included:

  • Ross Cortese -- Knights
  • Bill Cheney/Walker & Lee Realtors -- Tigers
  • Mark Davis/Glenn E. Thomas Dodge -- Dodgers
  • Dick Fulford/Los Alamitos Business Association -- Squires
  • Los Alamitos Country Club -- Yankees
  • Nick Katsaris/Sam's Sea Food - Shrimps
  • J.B. Cox & Company - Stars
  • Mark Bragen/Wonderbowl -- Cubs

The league, which would and change its name to the Rossmoor-Los Alamitos Little League, moved over to the base for some games in 1961 went there full-time in 1963. Over the years it has gone through a number of changes - including a merger in 1999 with the Pony League and another name change to its current Los Al Youth Baseball.

Now that facility is one of the best youth baseball facilities around and home to over 700 local youth baseball players.
