Greetings,
sports fans and community
minded citizens
Yes,
I know it's been a while
since our last Local Sports
-- sorry, sorry, sorry.
I've been busy with a few
hundred things , but those
things are slowly but surely
getting done, and I'll resume
getting Local Sports out
again on an quasi-irregular
basis.
For
those who haven't seen the Rossmoor
50th (Tri-Town Trot) 5K/1K
Race results, click
here for 5K and here
for 1K). For those
who want to see parts of the Los
Al Boys volleyball video,
click
here. For those who
want to see the Rossmoor
50th anniversary Parade video,
hold on a couple more weeks.
I'm almost done.
While
this issue is packed with news,
it's still missing a lot -- most
noticeably, the division winners
from the youth baseball and
softball leagues. If you
have a team photo of a
championship team, email me at localsports@earthlink.net.
And if anybody has info on the
annual Oak-McAuliffe track meet,
you know where to find me...
I'm
still waiting on photos and
information on the LAHS
Football's Burger Bowl (hint,
hint) and the many activities
that went along with that -
namely the installation of the
new scoreboard and the
dedication of the Los Al
football field to Los Al
football coach John Barnes.
Hopefully, I'll have the photos
and info very soon. (repeat --
hint, hint)
CAMPS:
With school now just about out,
some of you moms may actually
finally be thinking about summer
sports camps. Here's a
couple I know about:
BASKETBALL:
Los Al basketball coach Russ May
will be holding his annual camp
-- June 25-29 and July 16-20;
call him at (562) 714-9711
to sign-up.
And
Jack Haley and Jeff Dunlap will
once again be holding two
Complete Player Basketball Camps
at Los Al (see their ad below or
go to www.completeplayercamps.com.)
SOCCER:
Los Al Girls soccer coach Pat
Rossi will be holding a camp for
incoming freshmen players from
July 9-20. Contact him at
Patrossi@earthlink.net for more
info.
NEXT LEVELSOCCER: Some
entrepreneurial former Griffin
(and collegiate) soccer players
(Cameron
Kolovos,
Jeremy
Abrams, Sean Cima
and Mark
Biery)
are holding a soccer camp at
Rush Park July 16-20 for players
ages 6-13. Their former Los Al
teammate Jonathan
Bornstein
(now playing for Chivas USA and
the US Men's National team) will
make an appearance as well.
For more information call Mark
Biery (562) 355-0344 or email
him at tnlsoccer@gmail.com.
Also,
Champions
Quest
hosts a number of camps during
the summer. I would
suggest calling them at (562)
598-6300 because they're a
little slow at updating their
website with the latest info.
(Hey, they're trainers, not
nerds -- like moi.)
Finally, Vince
and Cristy Leone
officially open up their new indoor
batting cage facility on
June 28. It's fully automated,
with three cages, all of which
can handle hardball or softball.
It's at 10554 Humbolt just
beyond Los Al HS off Cerritos.
Check it out. (562) 598-CAGE.
Their email is losalcage@aol.com.

Local
rowers, Cours and Vella,
help LB Junior Crew win
national title
Two local rowers with the Long
Beach Jr. Crew program came away
with first place medals at the National
Junior Rowing Championships
held June 8-10 in Cincinnati,
Ohio.
Los Al
High students Taylor
Vella and Alex
Cours (shown right) were
part of the Girls Varsity 8
which captured the national
title by finishing the
1,000-meter course with a time
of 7:08:16,
three seconds better than second
place Maritime and third place
St. Ignatius.
The LB
Varsity women won their Friday
heat but their time was only the
fifth fastest, 11 seconds behind
fastest qualifying Maritime
Crew. In
Saturday's semi-finals the LB
squad closed that gap to
slightly over four seconds with
the second fastest time. In
Sunday's final, the LB girls
jumped out to an early
one-length lead coming through
the 500 meter mark, then
continued to push away to open
water in the latter half.
Another
Los Al rower, Chris
Edmunds, earned third
place hardware as part of Long
Beach's entry in the Boys
four-man race.
The
local rowers had qualified for
the nationals after their
success at the Southwest
Junior Rowing Championships
in Sacramento May 19-20.
LBJC teams
medaled in six of eight varsity
events at the meet, which
included all teams from 25
programs in California, Arizona
and Utah.
The LB girls
team made history, with entries
winning all four varsity events
-- which no other team has ever
done before. Cours rowed
on three of the winning teams --
including the winning girls quad
and girls four (don't ask me the
difference) -- and took a third
place medal in the girls
lightweight doubles.
On the boys
side, Edmunds' boys quad placed
second by a tenth of a second,
and he also grabbed a third
place medal in the boys double,
finishing a close third. The
boys varsity 8 with Edmunds and
fellow Griffin John
Oliveras earned an eighth
place spot out of 20 crews.
Despite qualifying teams for
the nationals in other
categories, the LB coaches
decided to focus on those
events which they felt they
had the best chance to win.
After her efforts at the
Southwest Regatta, Cours (a
sophomore from Rossmoor) was
invited to the US Rowing
National Development Team (Camp
B, for scullers). She will be
with 19 other high school girls
at the University Of Washington
from June 17th through the 26th.

SPRING
SPORTS WRAP-UP: Griffin
teams fall in CIF; VB
reaches quarters
While
there were some moments of
glory, the CIF playoffs were
not kind to Griffin
die-hards.
After
the high of winning a share
of the Sunset League baseball
championship (thanks to
Sunset League MVP Jordan
Tripp's game-winning hit over
Esperanza on May 8 - was it
really that long ago?), the
Los Al Griffin baseball team
suffered the low of once
again losing a first-round
CIF playoff game - this time
on May 18 to Canyon of Canyon
Country (up by Magic
Mountain). An
error-plagued six-run second
inning proved too much for
the Griffins to overcome.
Los Al finished the
season at 22-6.
[Griffin shortstop/pitcher
Travis Garrett was featured
in this LA
Times article on April 30.]
Softball
- which also won the Sunset
League championship -- made
it to the second round of CIF
play. The
Lady Griffins won their first
round game, downing
JSerra 3-1 on May 18 -
with Nikki Coppinger driving
in a run in the sixth inning
to tie it up and then hit a
game-winning two-run homer in
the eighth inning. Nikki
also doubled in two runs in
Tuesday's second round game
against Hart, but Los
Al fell 7-4.
Boys
volleyball's season
unfortunately ended as well
on Black Friday, after
reaching the quarterfinals
before losing
3-1 to Mater Dei.
The loss marked the end of
some major ups and downs over
the last two and a half weeks
of the season. On May 1
a heartbreaking
3-2 loss to Esperanza
(the eventual CIF champion)
ended hopes of a league
championship, and a
subsequent loss to Newport
Harbor forced them to share
second place with the
Sailors.
It
also sent them to Thousand
Oaks for their first round
CIF match, which they won in
five games in one of the more
dramatic finishes of the
season, the Griffins, facing
triple match point, rallied
for five straight points to
win the deciding fifth game,
16-11. They followed
that up with a convincing
3-0 win over Huntington Beach
on May 8, to set up a
showdown with No. 3 seed
Mater Dei.
Los
Al twice had game points
opportunities in the first
game, but the Monarchs
finally prevailed 29-27.
After Mater Dei won the
second game, Los Al rallied
for a game 3 win, but then
Mater Dei took the fourth
game. 25-22 was the score in
all three games. (Here's the Press-Telegram
account of the match.)
However,
the boys team, which finished
with a second best Los Al
season ever with a record of
22-9, did manage to keep
their string alive of playing
every game without the Los Al
High cheerleaders showing up
once. There was some
concern by Griffin Volleyball
parents that since this was a
CIF quarterfinal match, that
one or two rogue cheerleaders
might decide to show up and
ruin the streak.

SOFTBALL: Nelson named to
2nd team All-America squad
Former Griffin Stacey
Nelson (LAHS '05,
Rossmoor) who was 34-14 as a
pitcher for the University of
Florida this season, was named
to the second
team NCAA Softball Coaches
All-America squad.
Nelson's Gators
reached the second weekend of
play in the NCAA tournament but fell
to Texas A&M in three
games in their Super-Regional
May 24-26. Nelson, who set a
Florida record for most
wins in a single season,
helped Florida reach a
super-regional for the very
first time in school history, by
clinching the win during a 3-0
nine-inning win over Texas the
week before. After
clinching the win, Nelson was mobbed
by her teammates.
Brittany
Murphy (LAHS '04,
Rossmoor) had an RBI single but
her Long Island University
Blackbirds fell to UMass
7-3 and were eliminated in
the first weekend of NCAA
sotball tournament play on
May 19. Earlier
in the day, Murphy had two hits
as LIU downed
Colgate 5-1 to stay alive at
the regional. LIU
ended their season with a 34-22
record. Murphy
finished the season with a .284
average, but hit .397 in
conference play after switching
to batting left handed.
She earned second team
all-conference honors.
Heather
Johnson (Mater Dei '06,
Los Alamitos) was one-for-two
but the Notre Dame Irish fell
twice to No. 25 Illinois State
in the Evanston regional.
The Irish ended up with a 32-24
record. Johnson, who had
four hits in the regionals,
ended the season with a .306
average while playing third
base.

BASEBALL: Godfrey
earns all-region honors
for LB State; Prettyman
promoted to Triple A
Although
Long Beach State fell to UCLA
in the NCAA regional
playoffs, former Griffin Brandon
Godfrey (LAHS '2003,
Cypress, shown right) ended
the season strong.
He was named to the all-regional
team, and was the Big
West Conference's final Player
of the Week
for this season, plus he
earned a nice
article
by the P-T's Bob Keisser.
Godfrey is the son of Los Al
High principal Kelly Godfrey.
Another
ex-Los Al standout, Erik
Crichton (LAHS '03,
Seal Beach) saw his and his
Oral Roberts University
team's season come to an end
at NCAA regional play, as the
Golden Eagles (40-17) fell to
Wichita State. Crichton,
the Eagles top reliever,
finished the season with a
4-5 record and a 3.07 ERA in
25 appearances. He was
taken by Cincinnati in the
20th round of last week's
Major League baseball draft.
Chapman College saw its
best-ever season come to an
end at the Division II World
Series, with losses to Kean
and Emory. The Panthers had
opened the series with a win
over defending national champ
Marietta College.
Chapman earned a
trip to the D3 Series a week
earlier by downing Pacific
Lutheran (Washington) 1-0
with former Griffin Ryan
Prechtl driving in the
game's only run.
Chapman,
which finished the regular
season ranked No. 1, won a
school-record 41 games, while
losing eight.
Former Griffin Ronnie
Prettyman (LAHS
'00/Los Alamitos) has been
promoted to the Triple A Tacoma
Rainiers - a minor league
affiliate of the Seattle
Mariners. Last Thursday,
Prettyman doubled in the 10th
inning to help the Rainiers
to a 10-9
comeback win over
Portland.
Prettyman spent
the first month of the season
with the Mariners' double-AA
West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx
of Jackson, Tennessee.
Another
former Griffin and CSU
Fullerton star, David
Bacani (LAHS '97) is
now once
again playing in Fullerton's
Goodwin Field
as a member of the Fullerton
Flyers of the Golden Baseball
League.
Bacani had spent time in the

ALUMNI NEWS:
Munoz scores first-ever
goal for Calif. Victory;
Barnes leaves Alabama amid
controversy
Former
Griffin standout soccer player Mike
Munoz (LAHS '01, Los
Alamitos) scored the first goal
ever for the California Victory
of the USL 1st Division.
Munoz who had made the Chivas
USA roster last year, says he is
healthy after undergoing surgery
for an ankle injury last season.
Video of the goal can
be seen here.
Former
Los Al quarterback Jimmy
Barnes has decided to
leave the University of
Alabama and play football
elsewhere, but comments
attributed to his father, Los
Al football coach John Barnes,
have made his departure quasi
national news and the source
of an internet
controversy.
Jimmy was
recruited two years ago by by
Coach Mike Shula who was
fired after last season and
replaced by Nick Saban, who
runs a different style of
offense. That and an
untimely ACL injury which
prevented Jimmy from
participating in spring
drills and moved Jimmy way
down the depth chart made
Jim's football future at
Alabama somewhat
questionable.
While Jim
has apparently never said
anything to a reporter yet
about his departure, his
dad's remarks to the effect
that Saban's coaching methods
"wore on Jimmy"
sizzled over the internet
sports sites and on Jim
Rome's ESPN show last Friday.
The younger
Barnes is reportedly looking
at Div I-AA schools so he
won't have to sit out a year.

YOUTH
SOFTBALL: 12&Unders
come close at LAGSL
Tourney
The
LAGSL 12 & Under all-star
softball team came close, but
couldn't quite grab the
championship of their own
No-Longer-On-Fathers Day (not
to mention hardly played at
Rossmoor Park) Tournament the
weekend of June 8-10.
The local 12 A
all-stars reached the
championship game but
unfortunately fell to a tough
Westlake-Agoura squad 11-4 in
the tourney finale.
The 12s went 2-0 in
pool play, then downed South
Huntington Beach 9-4 in the
quarterfinals, and Cypress
11-5 in the semifinals to
earn a berth in the title
tilt.
The 12s went the
furthest of all league's
"A" all-star teams.
However
the LAGSL
12&U and 10&U B
(Blue) All-Star squads won
the Silver Division
championships of the
tournament.
This past
weekend the 12&U A squad
took home another second
place trophy, losing only to
Bonita Valley at the Vista
Tournament. It
was the third straight second
place finish for the 12 A's
(which I know is now
officially called the
"Red" team in yet
another unfortunate
submission to political
correctness, but I don't use
it because nobody knows if
you're talking about the
official all-star team or
not... but enough of the
rantings of a seriously
mentally-hampered man.)
Incidentally,
the 8A all-stars also took
home second place hardware at
the Vista Tournament.
MEANWHILE
IN TRAVEL BALL...
Rossmoor twins Andie
and Alex Formby helped
their Nemesis 10&U
travel softball team
win the State
Championship tournament
at Hemet over Memorial
Day weekend.
Nemesis won both its
pool games, then beat
the Corona Angels 2-1
in the semis and
advanced to the finals
to meet Victory USA,
where Nemesis won 3-1
and earn a berth in the
National championships
in August.
In the
championship game, Alex
Formby hit a two out
double to knock in the
first two runs and
added an RBI single two
innings later.
Sister Andie pitched
the final six innings,
allowing no runs.
In the tournament,
Andie pitched 17
innings, allowing only
one run which was an
intentional walk.
She only walked three
batters and had 13 K's.
