This will be short and sweet. In a Griffin graduation first, the entire 2009 Los Al HS Graduation ceremony will be broadcast -- LIVE ON THE INTERNET (on www.GoLosAl.com for sure and maybe the LAHS site and the LATV site) and then to be replayed at numerous times throughout the week on LATV, the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor public access station. The broadcast can be seen live beginning at 4:30pm tomorrow. This should be perfect for those grads whose relatives or friends can't get to Vets or live too far away. More details down below.
QUICK PLUGS -- Summer sports Camps. Russ May basketball camp. Jack Haley Complete Player Basketball Camp. Los Al Coach dave Huber's Volleyball camps are later this summer, and our good friends at Champions Quest have numerous camps. Click here to see them all. AJ Herrera, a Los Al HS Freshman, has been selected
#1 seed U.S. Junior Boy, to represent the United States at the 16th
World Water Ski Racing Championships, to be held in Belgium, July 18th-
25th 2009. Anyone interested in donating to help fund his trip (via a
check payable to the International Water Ski Racing Association), can

LAHS
GRADUATION: 2009 Grad ceremony to be broadcast live
on internet and replayed on LATV.
For the very first time, the entire Los Al HS Graduation
ceremony will be broadcast -- LIVE (on www.GoLosAl.com)
and then to be replayed at numerous times throughout
the week on LATV, the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor public
access cable station.
The broadcast can be seen live beginning
at 4:30pm tomorrow. This should be perfect for
those grads whose relatives or friends can't get to
Vets Stadium or live too far away.
Announcers for the
broadcast will be Fritz Pollard (LAHS Class of '81)
Keith Jones ('82) and Farren Benjamin ('08).
The coverage will feature a "pre-game" sampling of
interviews with grads, parents and VIPs, intterspersed
with a couple of video reports.
This is the 40th graduation
ceremony -- the first one was in 1970 at Handel Stadium
at Western High School.
The event will be a LosAl
TV Production, in association with OUR Los Al.
A
couple interesting stats on this year's class:
- 173 grads are attending Cal State universities
(*led by Long Beach State with 103 and next is Cal
Poly SLO with 16. In an indication of how times
have changed, only 2 will attend San Diego State.)
- 100 students are attending UC schools ( Irvine
20, UCSB 19, Davis 12, UC Berkeley 1, UCLA 11, Riverside
10, UC San Diego 9, Santa Cruz 7, Merced 1);
- 40 are attending private schools in California;
- 73 are attending out of state colleges (Arizona
State leads the list with 4)
Also, this year we figure that there are at least
19 Los Al alums who have children who are graduating
this year (does that make them alums squared?). Among
the proud alum parents are Monte Cole ('73, son Parker),
Lee Opkins ('73, son Larry), Pam Nixon Foremski ('74,
son Eric), Esther Taintor Randolph ('73, son Dillon),
Julie Fried Kadletz ('78, son Zach), Bill Deneff ('78,
daughter Christina), Mark Broersma ('78) and Erin
James Broersma ('80, daughter Meguire), Eddie Kesky
('79) and Donna Blackburn Kesky ('82, son Shane),
Warren Marriott ('81, son Carter), Granger Riach ('81)
and Sherry Dufek Riach ('82, son Tanner), Ralph Iknadosian
('81) and Kim Wiley Iknadosian ('84, son Jake), Bonnie
Mauler ('83, daughter Katherine), Dave Ritchie (’81,
son Christian), Catherine Bell Minery ('87, daughter
Amanda Bornon), and Mike Godoy ('88, son Tyler). As
always, I'm sure I forgot someone, so if you know
someone who should be on this list, let us know.
In addition Los Al Cheer & Song
will be selling their own DVD of the ceremony which
will include additional footage of all the graduation
events like Baccalaureate, Awards Night, etc.

LACROSSE: Crowell named OC Player of Year; Meyrans keep Coach of Year award in family; 8 total Griffins earn all-county honors
And Notre Dame bound Griffin senior Francie Crowell was named the Orange County Girls Larosse Player of the Year by the Orange County Register. Another good article on her can be seen here. Crowell, a former Los Al cheerleader who took up lacrosse as a freshman, led the Griffins to a perfect 19-0 season and the school's only CIF Championship this year. Also making all-county for Los Al were Shaina Denny and Lindsey Schmidt-Beck (first team), Ashley Actkinson (second team) and coach Meredth Meyran was the OC All-County Coach of the Year. Keeping it in the family, Meredith's husband, Kevin Meyran, was selected as the Register's Boys All-County Coach of the Year. Michael Marchand, C.J. Jacobs, and Kenny Smith made the Register's All-County first team squad. Nolan Smith made the second team. |

Los Al HS Alumni Newsletter #3 is out; Hall of Fame preliminary nominations are closed.
The third edition of our Los Al alumni newsletter was sent out in April and can be seen here. The Hall of Fame nominations are now closed, and the list of the finalists should hopefully be availble by the end of the month. 10 former Griffins will be honored at this year's ceremony --
six alums, three faculty/staff and one community member. If you're a
Griffin alum and didn't get one -- here's the link. Also our Griffin
alum site on facebook -- Los Al Griffin -- now has almost 2,500 alums
signed on. (Note:You have to be logged on to facebook for the main link to work -- although it's possible some old school photos may be seen here.)

LOCAL YOUTH: Los Al freshman, A.J. Herrera, qualifies for world water ski championships
It looks to be a very busy summer for local youth water skiier A.J.
Herrera, who has been selected as the top seeded American Junior Boy
skier and will represent the United States at the Water Ski Racing
World Championships, to be held in Belgium in mid July 2009.
As a warm-up for that challenge, Herrera will try to repeat as Junior
Boys champ in the annual Long Beach-to-Catalina ski race which takes
place July 12th. Two days later he leaves for Belgium and the World
Championships.
This past year, Herrera, a freshman at Los Al HS, played football, was
the Champions' Quest feature athlete in their last newsletter, and made
the Principal's Honor Roll last semester. More information on a fund to help defray some expenses incurred by Herrera and other US team members, can be viewed here. |
