Alright, the elections are over and now we can get down to serious stuff that really matters -- like the CIF playoffs, NCAA playoffs and football raffles.
Re: the latter -- Today
is your last chance to buy a LAHS football booster club raffle ticket
and a great chance to win a 2008
Toyota Tacoma Truck (donated by Penske Toyota of Downey-- okay, we gave you the free plug, now consider advertising with us -- just a thought). Anyway, raffle tickets costs $100 and sales are limited to 400
The drawing will be held at tonight's Griffin game against Newport
Harbor. Ticket holder need not be present to win. If you're
interested call Tim Kadletz at 562-431-5625.
CIF Playoff action is already underway for boys water polo (they won yesterday) girls tennis (they play bat El Dorado today) and girls volleyball (they play Temescal Canyon at Los Al HS tonight) and the Griffin football team is, despite its 8-1 record, amazingly in a must-win match to even qualify for the playoffs. True Griffin supporters are bin a quandary because the volleyballl and football matches take place at the same time.
Griffin alumni had another great week. Eight former Griffin girls have teams in the NCAA soccer playoffs.
YOUTH SPORTS SIGN-UPS:
It seems
baseball and softball registrations are earlier every year. (I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2009 fall
ball sign-ups starting right after Christmas.) Anyway,
registrations for LAGSL and LAYB are already underway. And St. Hedwig's Pony Baseball signups will officially begin this Saturday.
Basking
in the glory of their parent-friendly (i.e., one practice a week) fall success Friday
Night Lights flag football is now taking sign-ups for its first Spring season.
And for those
who believe baseball is a winter sport (or more importantly, are wondering how
you keep your kids occupied during the holiday break) there is the LB State Dirtbags Holiday Baseball Camp which runs from Dec. 22-28.
The Long Beach State girls volleyball team downed UC Irvine Wednesday night to stay atop the Big West standings. But in an equally impressive showing for the team, they skipped Tuesday practice to attend the funeral of the father of Rossmoor rez Glen Bickerstaff. The Bickerstaff family is among the most generous in the area -- almost always in a very quiet, behind the scenes manner -- and they have been especially helpful to Long Beach State and the 49ers girls volleyball program. They have also been very very generous and supportive of Los Alamitos High School causes (not just athletics). Our thoughts are with Glen, Debbie and their family.

LAHS CIF PLAYOFFS: Boys water polo opens with win, Girls Tennis, VB start today
The No. 3 seed Los
Al Boys Water Polo team opened their CIF Division I playoff run with a 15-3 win over Buena
at the JFTB base on Wednesday. Ryan Fattal,
Austin Trinkle and Forrest Watkins each scored four goals to pace the Griffins
(24-5). Los Al next plays on Friday
against Corona Del
Mar which defeated Inglewood
11-4.
The Los
Al girls volleyball team opens its CIF playoff action tonight against Temescal Canyon which swept Millikan on
Tiuesday. The Griffins, who were seeded third
behind Mira Costa and Long Beach Wilson, drew a first round bye. Were Los Al to win, they would play Saturday
against the winner of the Rosary-Thousand Oaks match.
The girls drew a No. 4 seed in the CIF playoffs after Santa Margarita moved up by virtue of their win over the nation's then No. 1 team, La Costa Canyon, at the Redondo Tournament.

LAHS FOOTBALL: Griffins in must-win mode against Newport Harbor tonight
There's one week to go in the high school football
regular season, but it already has a playoff armosphere.
The Press-Telegram's Frank Burlison points
out the necessity of a Los Al win over Newport Harbor. The game
will be played Thursday at Gahr Stadium.
An article in the Newport Beach Daily Pilot shows
the craziness that can happen if Newport beats Los Al and Esperanza
beats Edison and Fountain valley beats Marina -- leaving five teams
tied for first with a 3-2 record. Coin
flips would determine the first seeds and then head to head
action would come into play.
Here is the Register's Steve Fryer's take on the game. Los Al, which fell to Fountain valley two weeks ago, staved off disaster last Friday when QB Clark Evans led a late 85 yard touchdown march (culminating in a TD pass to Jon Cheri) and then completed a two-point conversion to Paul Richardson to down Esperanza 22-21.

LONG BEACH STATE: Womens VB wins, stays atop Big West; soccer enters NCAA playoffs, Mens BB set to open season
Long Beach State stayed atop the Big West Womens' Volleyball standings with a five-set win over UC Irvine on Wednesday night. Beach (11-2, 22-4 overall) has a two game lead with three to play.
The 49er women's soccer team plays its first-ever NCAA playoff match this Friday, against the University of San Diego Toreros at UCLA. The winner would play Sunday against the winner of Friday's UCLA-Fresno State match. San Diego beat Beach 1-0 earlier this season. The NCAA invite comes on the heels of a devastating loss last Sunday in the Big West Tournament championship match. The 49ers, winners of the Big West regular season, suffered a heartbreaking PK shootout loss to UC Santa Barbara after regulation play ended with a 1-1 tie. The shootout went to eight kicks, with Beach's last two kicks banging off the side posts and bouncing out. Former Griffin Hayley Bolt and teammate Kim Silos lead Beach into the playoffs. Both players garnered first-team all-BWC recognition for the
third year in a row. Bolt leads
the 49ers with 22 points and is second on the team with nine goals. Basketball tip off
Rossmoor rez and 49er mens basketball coach Dan Monson (left) will lead the Beach basketball team into its second season against BYU and Wisconsin this weekend. The 49ers, whose home opener is Feb. 22 against Weber State, are ready to prove their critics and pre-season pundits wrong.
The energetic and fan-friendly Beach mareting team is offering some extremely affordable ticket packages for this basketball season. The non-conference mini plan for the men includes five (5) games for just $35, and for the women, there is a six (6) game package for just $25.
