No your email's not broken, we have been a while between issues, having stretched ourselves a little thin with the
organization of this year's Taste for
Los Al and the 40th Anniversary
Los Al HS celebration.
This
year's Taste will be held October 18 at the Shops at Rossmoor - behind Stats and Circuit
City. Tickets can currently be purchased through a
participating Los Al High Booster Club. The
event is the grand finale of the first Reunion Week which kicks off with the first ever
Los Al High School Hall of Fame banquet on Wednesday night, October 15 (see story
below), then continues on Oct. 16 with the first Reunion Golf Classic (at Old Ranch)
and the Reunion Tennis Classic across the street at the Seal Beach Tennis
Center. Both events will have a
casual awards reception afterwards and attendees will get out in time to attend the football
game that night. (If you want to
attend or take part in any of these events, you can buy tickets through a participating booster club or by contacting
us.) Also, as part of our arrangement to get the Old Ranch golf course during the week, we need to get 40 Old Ranch members to participate. (They will get a reduced rate.)
On
Friday, October 17, alumni are invited back to Los Al High to visit the campus
and see former teachers. And then on
October 18 is the Taste. If you have any questions about any of the events, contact us. All the profits from these events benefit Los Al HS activities and facilities. Also, for you Los Al alums and long-time supporters, we've helped start a Los Al alumni website -- www.losalalumni.net. Check it out.
Because we've been in absentia for a couple months, we've let a lot of good information stack up. To kep this issue from being about three miles long. we're going to focus on the high school and alumni info this issue and get to most of the youth sports stash in our next issue.
Many locals have been coming to the aid of 10-year old Cody Waters (shown left) who is back at the Children's Hospital of Orange County after
a brain tumor has been resisting chemo and radiation treatment.
As
Rossmoor mom Pam Prussel says in her weblog
(September 8 entry):
"Last
spring ten year old Cody was running, playing, just being a boy. Suddenly
he was sick. He was diagnosed with cancer and within days he had brain surgery three
times. How do you process such a dramatic turn of events, as a child, as a
parent? Within the last few months Cody
has braved radiation, endured chemotherapy and been effected by the growth of
new tumors that have left him physically impaired.
"Cody's family
is very grateful for every drop of blood that he has been given. CHOC is in
need of blood both for Cody and other sick children. Go here for more information."

LOS AL HIGH SPORTS: Football improves to 2-0, Volleyball takes 6th in Vegas Tournament
The Los Al Varsity football team opened its season with two easy victories, downing Mayfair 24-3 and Fremont of Los Angeles 48-0. The Griffin skill players have looked good but quarterback Clark Evans might still be hampered by a shoulder injury suffered during the summer. The Girls Volleyball team looked impressive in winning the Gahr Tournament and turned in a strong showing (sixth place) at the Durango Classic in Las Vegas this weekend, which features some of the best high school volleyball teams in the nation. - No. 1 ranked boys water polo team faces tough test in Mater Dei on Tuesday night at JFTB
- Girls Tennis falls to Santa Margarita in games, 87-84.
- Some said it was never going to happen, but it's true -- the LAHS football weight room is finally ready to go.

LOCAL OLYMPIANS: Water Poloists strioke silver, Ishimatsu reaches diving semi-finals
Recapping
local success at last month's Beijing Summer Olympic Games, besides the
impressive opening ceremonies (impressive in a somewhat spooky sense),
some locals were part of impressive performances as well. MENS WATER POLO- Adam Wright (Seal Beach, UCLA) and Tim Hutten (LAHS '03, UC Irvine '08)
helped the US mens water polo team reach the Olympic finals before falling to
Hungary. Considering that the men's team
was not even among the top eight going into the Olympic games, a silver medal
is a great achievement. Even if they were in the top eight, it's still a great achievement.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO - Seal Beach residents Jessica Steffens and Natalie
Gregorka also brought home a silver medal, after the US women's team fell to the Netherlands
9-8 on a last-minute goal.
DIVING - Haley Ishimatsu, a
15-year-old from Seal Beach,
Calif. (the second youngest US
Olympian) reached the semi-finals , in the 10-meter diving competition. Ishimatsu, who was in 21st place after two rounds,
moved up to 16th after scoring 72 points on her reverse 3 ½ tuck in round three
advanced
to the semi-finals, moving up from 22nd to 16th place.
The Los Angeles Japanese Daily News ran a nice story on the Ishimatsu family. OLYMPICS PAST - Former Seal Beach swimmer Ron Radison remembers the Olympics he didn't get to compete in- the 1980 Moscow Olympics which President Jimmy
Carter forced the the US to boycott. |

ALUMNI FOOTBALL: Cason is an almost hero, Kluwe is a certified guitar hero
Former Griffin Antoine Cason (LAHS '04) was almost the hero of the Chargers' first two games this season- with a forced fumble against Carolina and interception late against Denver - both of which led to go-ahead touchdowns by the Chargers. But unfortunately the Chargers lost both games on final second opponent touchdowns.
Cason (LAHS '04) signed a 5-year, potential 12 million contract with the San Diego Chargers this summer. Last season, he won the Jim Thorpe award given to the best defensive back in college football.
The Dallas wrote a nice article on Cason and former Griffin teammate and Cowboy draftee Orlando Scandrick and how both benefitted from the ultra-attention drawn by former Los Al teammate Randy Estes.
It's been a busy summer for former Griffin kicker (and current Minnesota Viking punter) Chris Kluwe (LAHS '00, shown left). Earlier this summer Kluwe got media buzz because of his prowess on the Guitar Hero video game. (It even got a big mention on Jim Rome's ESPN show.) Then on July 2nd Kluwe joined the ranks of parenthood when his wife Olivia gave birth to a new baby girl. Kluwe can put some good money into the baby's college fund thanks to a six-year, $8.3 million contract extension last fall. To show his appreciation to the Vikes, Kluwe averaged 44.7 yards per punt... In the September 14 game, Kluwe had a busy day with six punts, averaging 43.3 yards in a 18-15 loss to Indianapolis.
The ink hasn't been too good for the UCLA football team the past few weeks, but former Griffin linebacker John Hale got a nice write-up in the LA Times last month... Former Griffin quarterback Jimmy Barnes, still not totally recovered from some lingering knee surgery issues, is now on the roster at Arizona State.

ALUMNI SOCCER: Ex-Griffin keepers Rocke, Santos earn Player of Week honors
Two former Los Al goalkeepers earned Defensive Player of the week honors in their respective conferences. San Jose State freshman goalkeeper Jordan-Michelle Santos, (LAHS '08) was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for September 8-14 after recording her third collegiate shutout, a 1-0 overtime victory over Sacramento State on Sunday, September 14. It was the second Defensive Player of the Week honor for Santos, who hails from Cypress. She also got a nice write-up in Spartan Daily student paper.
Annie Wethe (LAHS '08) has started all eight games in the midfield for for UC San Diego which is off to a 6-1-1 start.
Katie Suits (LAHS '08), now a freshman at Cal, scored a goal for the Bears in a 3-0 win over St. Joseph on Aug. 31.
Jana Lynn Mora (LAHS '07),
a transfer from Biola University, scored a goal for Long Beach
City College in its season opener. Former Griffin Erin Bay (LAHS '05, now a senior at Pepperdine) has hung up the her soccer boots after tearing her ACL for a third time. Her sister Casey (LAHS '07), a sophomore, who had earned her way into significant playing time rolled her ankle and will be out a few weeks.
Megan Strawther (LAHS '06) will miss this season for Virginia Tech after tearing her ACL in the team's final pre-season scrimmage and undergoing reconstructive surgery.
On the subject of injuries to young female athletes, here is an interesting article in the New York Times on the higher incidence of ACL knee injuries among female athletes.
Wes Feighner (LAHS '08) scored a goal for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as the Mustangs defeated visiting Evansville 3-0 before 3,120 fans. Evansville was ranked No. 21 nationally by the Soccer Times. It was Feighner's 3rd goal of the season for SLO which is now 4-2-1 overall. Feighner got some nice props in a preview of the Mustang season.
Feighner's fellow Griffin co-captain from last year, Kevin Venegas, scored a goal for Cal State Fullerton in their 2-0 win over Air Force Academy.

The Los Alamitos Water Polo Club 14&U girls won the gold medal at the National Junior Water Polo Championships, which were held in Irvine, California this summer.
The 14s (shown left, click for larger photo) defeated a tough Navy team from Annapolis, Maryland, in the championship match. In addition to the Girls 14 team, the Los Al club qualified 5 teams for the JO's, 10 & Under coeds, 12 & under Girls, 12 & Under Boys, and 14 & Under Boys.
The Los Al Girls 12&U team placed 6th out of 18 teams at the National .
On the boys' side, Griffin senior Forrest Watkins earned honorable mention All-American at this summer's National Junior Olympic Water Polo Championships. He, and fellow Griffins Michael Delaney, and Ryan Fattal played for Riverside which went into the tournament seeded 23rd, but pulled off a sixth place finis.
