Winter sports are finishing
up and the spring sports are just getting underway
this weekend -- weather permitting. The
Rain shouldn't stop the runners at the annual
Los
Alamitos 5k/10k Race at the Base.
For those looking for a wet workout you can
still sign up at the site.
Los
Al Youth Baseball and Seal
Beach Pony Baseball are scheduled to open
their seasons tomorrow, if the rain lets them.
This will be LAYB's
50th anniversary of its first Opening Day,
although they don't even mention that on their
website. Maybe they were confused because
it's the start of their 51st season, or perhaps
they were distracted with the glee from finally
paving their parking lot after all these years.
That will certainly help keep lots of cars much
cleaner over the coming season.
St.
Hedwig Pony Baseball begins play on March
1 and Los
Al Girls softball starts play on March 8.
Only
two Los Al high teams are still alive in CIF
playoff action as of this writing -- boys and
girls soccer -- although that may change in
the next few hours. Hopefully not, but
to find out the latest on Los Al High Sports,
go to www.GoLosAl.com.
This is a single easiest way to find information
for all things Griffin.
Griffin
Spring sports teams start holding their scrimmages
tomorrow and begin non-league play next week.
We
don't have much alumni or community news this
week, but we'll have plenty in our next issue.
Or again, not to be redundant but check the
golosal website for the latest Los Al news.

LAHS WRESTLING: Odierno takes first at Coastal Division
Individuals; team takes fourth
Led by Richard
Odierno's first place finish in the 130 pound
division at the CIF Coastal Division Individual Championships,
five Los Al wrestlers qualified to compete in next week's
Masters Meet to be held at Rialto High.
The Griffins matmen totaled 124.5 points, good enough
for a fourth place finish at the event, held Saturday
at Marina High School.
The top five finishers at each of the six sectional
meets qualify for the Masters Meet. Also advancing for
Los Al are Benjamin
Goldfarb (fourth place in the 135s), Joshua
Jones (fifth in 140s), Nicolas
Pereira (fourth in the 145s), and Christian
Mosier (third in the 160s).
Los
Al wrestler takes shot at the impossible
The
OC Register ran a great story in the Sunday, Feb.
17 issue on Los Al wrestler Cullen Fitzgibbon. The
Griffin senior was 0-28 in his career and still
helped those around him become winners.
If
you want to know what the best of high school sports
is all about -- this
is it.

Los Al's try for a third straight
CIF Southern Section championship came up short on
Tuesday night, when the Griffins fell to Dos Pueblos
61-51. Los Al, the Sunset League champions, finishes
the season with a 19-9 record.
Dos Pueblos jumped out to an early
10-12 point lead and maintained it most of the way.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Griffins cut it to
seven, but a Dos Pueblos run put the game out of reach.
Los Al was 1-11 from three-point
range. Corbin Moore
(right) led Los Al with 16 points and sophomore guard
Paul Richardson
had 13. Moore also had 14 rebounds, giving him 368
on the season and 911 for his career, which breaks
the 36-year old school record of 890, set by Rick
Quinn in 1969-72.

YOUTH BASEBALL: LAYB slated to open 50th season this weekend -
Although rain may cause postponement, the Los Al Youth Baseball league is scheduled to officially open its 50th Season - and its new parking lot - this Saturday at its fields.
Since there is no mention of it on the league website, they are probably unaware of the significance. So here are a few facts.
The league, which began as the Rossmoor Little League in 1958, held its first opening day that season with Andy Messersmith (who would go on to pitch for the Dodgers and be instrumental in bringing free agency to professional baseball) striking out 14 batters en route to a 2-0 win. (more)
