Well,
it's been a while since our last issue,
but we got knee deep into a passel
of The
Taste For Los Al -- final tally:
we raised $234,000 -- complete
details here -- and then after
that, I didn't have the energy to
look at all the emails and info people
had sent me. A clip on the event
is also supposed to be available on
Time-Warner Cable's on-demand station.
The clip has also been airing on
the SoCal Report segment on the Headline
News Network (Channel 43 in Los Al/Rossmoor).
It airs at :25 and :55 past each hour.
LAHS
40th ANNIVERSARY
SUPER-REUNION:
Since 1) so
many people consider
the Taste as a
"mini-Los Al
HIgh reunion,"
and 2) next
September marks the
40th year
anniversary of the
opening of the Los
Al High campus, we
figured why not make
it even more of a
reunion? So we
have begun working
with some of the
many Los Al High
reunion committees
and make next year's
Taste a "super
reunion."
Our tentative date
is October 18.
If you're a Los Al
grad, tell your
reunion honchos to
get in touch with us
for more info.
Because
our issues have been
getting bigger and
clogging up some
corporate email
servers, we figure
the solution is --
(drum roll, please)
-- shorter emails.
So we are going to
try to make this
email version much
shorter, but the
complete longer
issue is available
at our website -- www.localsports.biz.
High school results
are available at www.GoLosAl.com
-- this is our new
effort in
coordination with
some of the high
school athletic
booster clubs.
The goal is: 1)
establish a single
easy-to-remember
gateway for all
things Los Al.
If a club doesn;t
have a webpage we'll
provide a basic one,
and if they already
have their own,
we'll make it easy
to link to; and 2)
provide a
marketplace for
local merchants who
can reach their
target audience
while helping LAHS
activities at the
same time. (It's a
work in progress, so
bear with us.)
Okay,
on to the good
stuff.

WATER POLO: Griffins
gain redemption, capture
CIF Masters Tournament

One
week after a heartbreaking
loss in the CIF boys water
polo semifinals,
the Los Al Griffins gained
some redemption by winning
the second annual CIF Masters
Tournament.
The masters tournament field
is comprised of all the
division champions in the CIF
Southern Section playoffs and
high ranked teams as well.
Los Al began the tourney with
a 10-9
win over CIF Division I champ
and No. 1 seed Newport Harbor
on Friday.
In the semi-finals
against Agoura,
Austin Trinkle scored the
winning goal on a
three-quarters length of the
pool shot with a half second
left to give Los Al an 8-7
upset win. Trinkle then
scored three goals in the
final period as Los Al
captured the title with a
10-9 win over El Toro on
Saturday evening at the
William Woolett Aquatics
Center at Heritage Park in
Irvine.
Los Al finished with a 25-9
record.

WINTER SPORTS:
Griffin basketball ,
soccer teams begin 2007-08
seasons
The Los Al winter sports
season is now officially
underway with the boys soccer
and boys and girls basketball
teams posting wins, while the
girls soccer squad fell in
its season debut.
Boys
soccer opened its season on
Monday with a 3-1 win over
Long Beach Poly, getting
goals from Kevin Venegas,
Bill Hoffman and Josh Dobson.
The Griffins resume
non-league play against
Nogales at Laurel High on
Wednesday. JV
and Frosh-Soph games will be
played at Los Al High.
The boys basketball squad
(which is also a two-time
defending league as well as
CIF champ, shown left after
last year's win) opened its
last night with a
70-46 win over Bell in the
first round of the Cerritos-Gahr
tournament. Sophomore
transfer Tim Chung led Los Al
with 18 points. The
Griffins play Cerritos on
Wednesday night, with their
next opponents being
determined by their pool play
finish.
The
Los Al girls soccer squad,
also the defending Sunset
League champs, weren't as
successful in its 2007-08
debut against Santa
Margarita. A defensive
mistake in clearing the ball
led to an easy Eagles goal
and while Los Al controlled
the ball for most of the
entire second half, they
couldn't convert their
opportunities. The match was
the first of two games this
week against ranked teams.
Los Al is ranked No. 5 and
Santa Margarita No. 10 in the
CIF Coaches Division I
pre-season poll which really
means nothing, but gives
writers like us something to
put in their stories.
On Thursday Los Al
will host No. 8 Long Beach
Wilson in what is always a
very tough match.
The Griffin wrestling team
kicks off its season on
Thursday with a meet against
Lakewood.

FOOTBALL: Cason wows
national TV audience;
Childs breaks Boise
receiving mark
Former
Griffin Antoine
Cason (LAHS '04) came
up big in front of a national
audience when he returned an
interception and a punt for a
touchdown as Arizona beat
then No. 2 Oregon 34-24
on Nov. 15 and ignited a
massive post-game celebration
in Tucson (shown right).
For his efforts Cason
was named National defensive
player of the week.
Cason has also been
named one of three
finalists for the Jim Thorpe
award - which goes to the
nation's top defensive back.
The winner will be
announced on ESPN on December
6.
Former
Los Al receiver Jeremy
Childs (LAHS '05) has broken
the Boise State single season
receiving record.
Childs set the new
mark late in the first
quarter of Boise's
39-27 loss to No. 10
Hawaii last Friday night,
catching a 19-yard pass to
convert third-and-9.
One
reason Hawaii quarterback was
able to pick apart the Boise
defense in the second half
was the loss of both Bronco
starting cornerbacks,
including former Griffin
Orlando
Scandrick who
broke his thumb.

WATER POLO:
Hutten leads UCI to near
win at MPSF championship
match
Former Griffin water
polo star Timothy
Hutten (LAHS '03,
left) has put together a
great season for himself,
leading UC Irvine to the
finals of the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation
water polo tournament.
Hutten scored four
goals but it wasn;t enough
as the Anteaters fell 10-6
to No. 2 USC in the
championship game.
On
Friday against
UCLA Hutten's goal in
late second overtime sent
the match into sudden
death in which UCI
prevailed 10-9.
Former Griffin
teammate Scott
Davidson (LAHS '05)
led
UCLA with three goals.
In Saturday's
semifinal, Hutten led all
players with five goals in
the 13-12 victory over UC
Berkeley.
Hutten
had scored seven against
the Bruins in a 12-11
overtime loss in
September, then scored a
school-record nine goals
to help the fifth ranked
UC Irvine Mens water polo
team down
UC San Diego 18-6 on
Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Hutten entered the
tournament leading the
MPSF in goals per game
(3.71 with 63 scores in 17
contests), and proceeded
to score 12 in three MPSF
Tournament games.
UCI's
New
University student
newspaper ran this
nice article on Hutten.

the Cardinals this year.
Good news, bad news:
Good news is
ex-Griffin Cameron

Bad news is he saw
some against the No. 4 ranked
University of Kansas last
week when the Jayhawks
dismantled the Lumberjacks 87-46
on Nov. 21.
The score was 44-10 at
halftime. Jones
led NAU with eight points.
Jones went 3-for-4 in
NAU's 76-69 loss to Arizona
