Well, we got a little
sidetracked on a couple other projects -- and
ended up getting way behind, so to catch up, we're
going to make this short and sweet. For the
latest and most complete details, go to www.golosal.com.
Today, the Los Al
softball and boys volleyball teams play CIF
playoff games at home.
The No. 6 Griffin Boys
volleyball team plays a quarterfinal match
against Loyola at 7pm in the Los Al gym. The
Griffins played perhaps their best game of the
year in sweeping Huntington Beach on Tuesday
night. Loyola and Los Al have split the two
matches they played earlier this year.
Loyola fans always travel well,
and they've already gotten two busloads of fans to
make the trip. Plus their cheerleaders know
how to get their fans into it -- so aspiring local
cheerleaders, who want to know how to actually
lead a crowd in cheers, would do well to attend
the game.
Los Al Girls
softball hosts Corona at 3:15 at Los
Al. The Griffins, the No. 2 team in the
Sunset League, take an 18-11 record into the match
against Corona, the No. 2 team from the Mountain
View League. Corona is 22-9
overall. After a rough start, the
softball squad has turned things around and now is
playing as well as anybody. The team's
potent attack is led by Brittany
Spaulding whose 15 home runs is tops in
Orange County. Reportedly, one of thoser
homers went onto Los Al Boulevard. In 11
years of doing this little publication, I have
never heard of or seen any other Griffin player do
that.
Track and Field is
sending four individual athletes -- Wes Feighner,
(400 meters), Alexa Ward (pole
vault), Brianna
Dixion (high jump), and Chris Yates (shot
put) -- and the boys 4x400 relay team of Feighner,
Myles
Andrews, Garrett Verdone,
and Jake
Strange to the CIF Division I finals this
weekend.
Griffin soph Jonathan Kim won
the CIF Regional Individual Boys Golf Championship
last Monday at Sea Cliff in Huntington
Beach.
Girls Lacrosse
reached the Orange County championships for the
second straight year, and Los Al swimmers had good
showings at the CIF meets. For the
latest info on these and other Los Al High teams,
check out our GoLosAl.com site.

community news next week. Remember the CIF
playoff games today. Now on to the good
stuff.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: No. 6 Griffins host Loyola
in CIF quarterfinal match Friday
night
The Los Al Boys volleyball
team plays a quarterfinal match against Loyola at 7pm
Friday in the Los Al gym. The No.
6 ranked Griffins played perhaps their best game of the
year in sweeping Huntington Beach (26-24, 25-23, 26-24)
on Tuesday night before a loud spirited crowd of
900 at the Oilers gym.
Los Al got on the board early
as setter junior Sean Senozan (43 assists) went early
and often to middle blockers Michael Strawther and Matt
Markel who delivered. That opened the
game up for the outsides and Kyle McElderry responded
with 14 kills and junior outside Brian Miller, playing
perhaps his best game of the season, added ten kills.
The Griffins rallied from five points
and six points back in the final two games to win the
games and match. Los Al
helped itself by committing only eight service errors,
one of its best showings this season, and its passing
off of serves was also among its best efforts. Libero
Dewy Thomason was superb and McElderry and Miller turned
in very solid showings as well. Loyola
and Los Al have split the two matches they played
earlier this year. Los Al is now 23-9
overall, the most wins ever by a Griffin boys team.

BASEBALL: Griffins open CIF playoffs by
downing Poly 2-0; Wright improves to
9-0
Junior left-hander Beau Wright
improved his record to 9-0 by pitching a two-hitter with
eight strikeouts for the top-seeded host Los Alamitos
(25-3) as they got past the ominous first round let-down
and defeated Long Beach Poly 2-0 in a first-round CIF
Division I playoff game.
Senior Zack Hannaford scored on a
single by senior Brian Tripp in the third inning and
Tripp scored later in the same inning on a wild pitch
for the Griffins.
Los Al, the Sunset League champions
and the No. 1 Ranked team in CIF Division I, will now
face Canyon of Anaheim in a second round game next
Tuesday. The home site will be determined by coin flip.

Conference honors; Chapman opens with 2
wins
Los
Alamitos grad Tyler

in six years, the Panthers will have to go on the road
to capture another regional title.
The
three-time defending West Region champs traveled to
Abilene, Texas and began postseason play on Wednesday by
beating Laverne 4-3, with former Griffin Ryan Prechtl
banging out two hits. On Thursday, Chapman
defeated McMurry 5-3 in 12 innings.
Chapman
plays Trinity today in a semi-final match and a win
would put them in tomorrow's championship
game.
