Greetings,
sports fans and
community-minded citizens!
Happy
New Year yada yada yada. .
.
Well,
we somehow survived the
holidays – and we’re
still standing (albeit
probably fifteen pounds
heavier) to talk about it.
Although there was much
that was good about this
past month, it was also a
very sad time as my wife
Nancy's mother, Helen
Komer, passed away
just before Christmas.
Helen (or Baba to her
grandchildren) was a
Rossmoor resident for the
past 46 years, and
indicative of so many of
the mothers and
grandmothers in this
community – supportive,
encouraging, dependable
– and unabashedly biased
towards her kin. God bless
Baba and all you other
encouraging mothers and
grandmothers out there.
A quick
reminder for all you
procrastinators out there,
final signups deadline for
LAGSL, St. Hedwig, LAYB
and Seal Beach Pony is
looming. Do it online or
in person. And you young
aspiring softballers --
take advantage of the batting
and pitching clinics
being offered by LAGSL
this weekend.
The Los
Al Boys basketball begins
its home season tonight
against Edison. These are
almost always tight,
entertaining games, so if
you have a chance, check
it out –and check out
the Griffins media
guide/program (put
together by the boosters
and yours truly). Lots of
good information — click
here for the players,
records,
and history
sections), and remember to
support the advertisers in
those books.
LATV3
will be broadcasting the
home basketball games
again – although for a
time it seemed doubtful.
What is with this LATV
thing anyway? Am I the
only one confused by all
the hyperbole and hysteria
about this issue –
whatever the
"issue" is.
Somebody needs to do some
good reporting on this.
(We’d do it ourselves,
but you notice we said
“good reporting.”)
As
always we have lots of Los
Al High news, alumni
updates, and even some
AYSO all-star reports –
but only for a few teams.
(You AYSO coaches and
parents really need to do
a better job of keeping us
informed. Inquiring minds
want to know -- especially
those parents who think,
"see, you shoulda put
my kid on the all-star
team.)
To
those who have expressed
interest in advertising in
our humble publication, we
will be getting back to
you folks very shortly and
discuss ways that you can
tempt us and then lead us
down the sordid, soiled
road to positive revenue.
Alright, so much for this
long-winded preamble –
let’s get to the good
stuff.

Los

Edison on
Wednesday
Behind goals by Daniel
Crandall
and Zac
Rothman, the
Los Al Boys
soccer team got
their first
Sunset League
win, downing
Marina 2-1
last Friday
afternoon.
Overall, Los Al
boys are now
sporting an
11-2-6 record.
The Griffins
opened their
league season
last Wednesday, tying
Newport Harbor
2-2, with
junior Wes
Feighner
(shown right)
scoring twice for
the Griffins.
Feigner, who was
the leading
scorer in the U17
Premier Club
league this fall,
has been used
mainly in a
defensive role
for Los Al,
although coach
Donovan Martinez
moved Feighner up
front once the
Griffins fell
behind Newport.
Feighner's fall
offensive efforts
for his club were
noticed by the
folks at US
Soccer who
invited him to a
mid-December
training camp for
with the U-17
National soccer
team at the US
Soccer Academy in
Bradenton,
Florida. Wes
played games
against the
Canadian National
Team and the
United States U20
National Team.
Without Feighner,
the Griffins
reached the
finals of the
Irvine Tournament
but lost to
former Sunset
League rival
Huntington Beach
3-1 in the
championship
game. A week
later, Los Al
went 4-0-1 in the
Marina
Tournament, but
in the
quarterfinals
they tied Wilson
and the Bruins
advanced on PKs,
leaving Los Al to
play for fifth
place which they
won with wins
over Tustin and
Bell.

including
reaching the
finals of the

falling to the

But then the

losing 2-0 in

before
salvaging some

Obviously one
of the more
exciting
college
football games
during the
recent bowl
season was
Boise
State’s
43-42 win over
Oklahoma, and
the Broncos
had a bevy of
Griffins—
starters Quinton
Jones and Orlando
Scandrick
(both
defensive
backs), and
reserves Jeremy
Chiles and
Cameron
Filkins on
their roster.
In fact, the
four Griffins
are just a
portion of the
many
Orange County
players on
the Boise
roster.
Scandrick got
called for a
bogus pass
interference
penalty (he
had inside
position, the
ball was
underthrown,
and the
receiver
initiated the
contact) late
in the game
which allowed
Oklahoma to
tie the game.
But thanks to
some daring
play-calling,
Boise
prevailed (and

final plays

Former Griffin
Jimmy
Barnes
underwent
surgery to
repair a torn

December. No
time is ever a
good time for
an injury, but
compounding
the malady is
that Alabama
just hired a
brand new
coach –
former Miami

Saban — and
unless he
makes
miraculous
recovery,
Barnes will
miss the
chance to make
a good first

Providing
proof positive
that your life

after
something bad
happens in
high school,
former Griffin

others being
sophomore
linebacker Nathan

Injuries
and attitide

Not only did the
Duda's effort

Stanford

getting good
minutes for the

weekend he played
22 minutes in
Stanford’s

Fields, one of

struggled with

his rebounding

Ironically, one
of Field’s best

11-point effort

points in 11
minutes in the
first half, but
only played two
and a half
minutes in the
second half.
Stanford, which
is 9-4 overall,
hosts Washington
and Washington

weekend.
Former Griffin Kyle

Tournament in
Fountain Valley
on Dec. 30-31.
Los Al opened
with a 4-2 win
over Cypress,
sparked by great
first half goals
from Lea Albers
and Jenna Hudson,
then followed
with wins over
Quartz Hill (3-0)
and Fountain
Valley (5-0, with
Emmons scoring
two goals in the
latter) before
facing a much
taller and more
physical Arcadia
squad. After a
scoreless first
half, Los Al
parlayed second
half goals by
Albers and Kelly
Peterson for a
2-0 victory.
NOTE: If the
other coaches
would send me
information,
I’d be happy to
report on their
teams. (In fact,
send it now, and
we'll add it on
our AYSO
page) Click

might be
informative if
they ever update
it)
