Greetings, sports fans and community-minded citizens!

Happy New Year yada yada yada. . .
Well, we somehow survived the holidays – and we’re still standing (albeit probably fifteen pounds heavier) to talk about it.
Although there was much that was good about this past month, it was also a very sad time as my wife Nancy's mother, Helen Komer, passed away just before Christmas. Helen (or Baba to her grandchildren) was a Rossmoor resident for the past 46 years, and indicative of so many of the mothers and grandmothers in this community – supportive, encouraging, dependable – and unabashedly biased towards her kin. God bless Baba and all you other encouraging mothers and grandmothers out there.
A quick reminder for all you procrastinators out there, final signups deadline for LAGSL, St. Hedwig, LAYB and Seal Beach Pony is looming. Do it online or in person. And you young aspiring softballers -- take advantage of the batting and pitching clinics being offered by LAGSL this weekend.
The Los Al Boys basketball begins its home season tonight against Edison. These are almost always tight, entertaining games, so if you have a chance, check it out –and check out the Griffins media guide/program (put together by the boosters and yours truly). Lots of good information — click here for the players, records, and history sections), and remember to support the advertisers in those books.
LATV3 will be broadcasting the home basketball games again – although for a time it seemed doubtful. What is with this LATV thing anyway? Am I the only one confused by all the hyperbole and hysteria about this issue – whatever the "issue" is. Somebody needs to do some good reporting on this. (We’d do it ourselves, but you notice we said “good reporting.”)
As always we have lots of Los Al High news, alumni updates, and even some AYSO all-star reports – but only for a few teams. (You AYSO coaches and parents really need to do a better job of keeping us informed. Inquiring minds want to know -- especially those parents who think, "see, you shoulda put my kid on the all-star team.)
To those who have expressed interest in advertising in our humble publication, we will be getting back to you folks very shortly and discuss ways that you can tempt us and then lead us down the sordid, soiled road to positive revenue.
Alright, so much for this long-winded preamble – let’s get to the good stuff.

PREP BASKETBALL: Los Al finishes pre-season strong, and opens Sunset with 106-78 win over Marina

Amberry scores 36 in win over Vikings; Jones MVP of Florida tourney; Griffins home opener against Edison Wednesday night
Amberry

After an up-and-down pre-season, the Los Al Griffin basketball team is on a five game up swing after winning the KSA Tournament in Florida and then opening the Sunset league with a 106-87 win over Marina, last Friday night.
Against Marina senior center Clint Amberry (shown at right) scored 36 points, the seventh highest single game total in Los Al history. Senior guard Cameron Jones added 28 points.
The Griffins total of 106 was seven shy of their all-time high of 113 set in 1971.
Jones’ effort marked his third straight twenty plus game. He had 26 points against Westlake (Ga.) in a 66-62 victory in the final of the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Florida, , and scored 24 points in the semifinal win over St. Francis de Sales of Ohio.
Los Al, which is now 13-3. takes on Edison in their home opener Wednesday night.

BOYS SOCCER: Crandall, Rothman key Griffins first league win

Los Al, sporting 11-2-6 overall record, hosts Edison on Wednesday
Feighner-mug

Behind goals by Daniel Crandall and Zac Rothman, the Los Al Boys soccer team got their first Sunset League win, downing Marina 2-1 last Friday afternoon.
Overall, Los Al boys are now sporting an 11-2-6 record.
The Griffins opened their league season last Wednesday, tying Newport Harbor 2-2, with junior Wes Feighner (shown right) scoring twice for the Griffins.
Feigner, who was the leading scorer in the U17 Premier Club league this fall, has been used mainly in a defensive role for Los Al, although coach Donovan Martinez moved Feighner up front once the Griffins fell behind Newport.
Feighner's fall offensive efforts for his club were noticed by the folks at US Soccer who invited him to a mid-December training camp for with the U-17 National soccer team at the US Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Wes played games against the Canadian National Team and the United States U20 National Team.
Without Feighner, the Griffins reached the finals of the Irvine Tournament but lost to former Sunset League rival Huntington Beach 3-1 in the championship game. A week later, Los Al went 4-0-1 in the Marina Tournament, but in the quarterfinals they tied Wilson and the Bruins advanced on PKs, leaving Los Al to play for fifth place which they won with wins over Tustin and Bell.

PREP SOCCER: Griffin Girls thump Marina 5-0 in league opener

Los Al team rebounds after rocky showing at Excalibur Cup

After a roller coaster ride for a preseason, the Los Al girls soccer team began a new up and down ride in the Sunset League, downing Marina 5-0 on Thursday and then falling to Edison 1-0 yesterday (Tuesday).
Against Marina, freshman Ari Carillo scored twice for Los Al, while Casey Bay, Katie Ikuta and Stephanie Duarte added solo goals. Junior
Greer Wilk collected two assists, while Bay and freshman April Cross each had one.
Los Al has now beaten Marina seven games in a row over the last four years. The Griffins try to get back on the winning track with a home match on Thursday against Fountain Valley.
After starting the season with two losses, Los Al seemed to steady its ship by winning nine of ten, including reaching the finals of the Mater Dei Tournament, falling to the Monarchs 1-0 in the championship game.
But then the Griffins struggled at the Excalibur Cup, losing 2-0 in the first round to eventual champion Buena, and falling 1-0 to Orange Lutheran, before salvaging some pride with a 2-1 win over Beckman.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Griffins drop home opener in OT, 49-48

Kovach three-pointer at buzzer ties game at end of regulation

The Los Al Girls basketball team, which went 9-5 in the pre-season, fell 49-48 in overtime in their Sunset league opener against Marina last Thursday night.
The Griffins’ Katie Kovach hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, but the Vikings outscored Los Al 6-5 in the extra period. Kovach and Marissa Main each scored 12 points to lead the Griffin attack.
The Griffins play at Edison on Tuesday and host Fountain Valley on Thursday night.
Heading into league play, the Griffins had won five of their last six non-league contests, including winning three of four at the Lady Rebels Classic at Savanna High School between Christmas and New Year’s.

PREP WATER POLO: Los Al girls face No. 3 Newport Harbor in Sunset League showdown

Griffins destroy Loara in West OC tourney
wp-brady

The Los Al girls water polo team hopes that the momentum they gained by winning the Western OC Shootout this weekend carries over to their big Sunset League showdown with Newport Harbor on Wednesday night.
The Griffins topped off their weekend’s efforts with a big 19-2 win over Loara in the championship game of the Western OC Shootout at Keennedy High School.
Los Al was led by San Diego State-bound Sarah Brady (shown, right) who scored 3 goals in the match. Junior Kaylee Miller added 2
Earlier in the day, Los Al downed El Segundo 9-2. Kaley Dodson scored five goals in the match. Brady, who was named the tournament MVP, scored a pair. Dodson and Miller also both had five goals in the Griffins resounding 12-0 win over Fountain Valley last Wednesday night in the team’s Sunset League opener. On the season, Brady has now scored 70 goals, while Miller has 69.
Los Al, which now sports a 16-2 overall record, resumes Sunset League action this week against league favorite Newport Harbor in the Sailor’s pool at 6pm. Newport Harbor, last year’s Division II champion, is currently ranked No. 3 in the Orange County coaches' poll. The Griffins, winners of four straight Sunset League championships, are No. 6.

PREP SIGNINGS: Carroll inks with UCI volleyball, Borg to play football at Fresno

Defense turns in outstanding effort, place four on first team All-Sunset League squad

Local athletes continue to sign college commitments, justifying some of the expenses their parents have paid for training over the years. Griffin senior Kevin Carroll, signed to play volleyball at UC Irvine next year.
The 6-3 Carroll, a member of the Junior National team, has been most seriously considering offers from UCLA, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara, but felt he had a great connection with Irvine coach John Speraw.
Last year, Speraw, a longtime UCLA assistant, led the Anteaters to a 27-5 record, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship, and the school's very first ever NCAA appearance, earning NCAA Coach of the Year honors.

Carroll’s teammate, Srdjan Nadazdin, and Servite’s Rory Prager (a St. Hedwig School alum) both committed to play at Long Beach State next season. Nadazdin, who plays for the Long Beach Club, earned all tournament honors at the National JO finals last summer. Prager, a middle blocker, plays for Highline Volleyball Club.

Kenny Borg, who earned 2nd team all-county and all-CIF honors for the Los Al football team this season, has committed to play for the Fresno State Bulldogs next season. He committed in mid-December when Fresno coach Pat Hill was at the Borg house for dinner. Borg was also named to the first team All-Sunset League squad.

ALUMNI FOOTBALL: Ex-Griffins contribute to Boise State Fiesta Bowl win

Four Griffins are on roster of Broncos, who end season undefeated and ranked No. 5

Obviously one of the more exciting college football games during the recent bowl season was Boise State’s 43-42 win over Oklahoma, and the Broncos had a bevy of Griffins— starters Quinton Jones and Orlando Scandrick (both defensive backs), and reserves Jeremy Chiles and Cameron Filkins on their roster. In fact, the four Griffins are just a portion of the many Orange County players on the Boise roster. Scandrick got called for a bogus pass interference penalty (he had inside position, the ball was underthrown, and the receiver initiated the contact) late in the game which allowed Oklahoma to tie the game. But thanks to some daring play-calling, Boise prevailed (and if you want to see those final plays again, click here).

Former Griffin Jimmy Barnes underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in mid December. No time is ever a good time for an injury, but compounding the malady is that Alabama just hired a brand new coach – former Miami Dolphins head coach Nick Saban — and unless he makes miraculous recovery, Barnes will miss the chance to make a good first impression during spring drills.

Providing proof positive that your life isn’t over after something bad happens in high school, former Griffin quarterback Chad Manis who played at Cerritos College this past season has committed to play football at the University of Utah in Fall 2007.
Manis was one of four Griffins on the Cerritos roster this season, the others being sophomore linebacker Nathan Quinn, freshman wide receiver Ryan Pettys, and freshman defensive back Anthony Giambona.

Injuries and attitide hobbled him earlier this season but former Griffin John Hale, who lost his starting linebacker job at UCLA, hung in there and earned the starting slot back by the time UCLA played in the Emerald Bowl. . .

ALUMNI SOCCER: Bornstein invited to train with mens national team

Bolt, Grimaldi earn All-Region honors
Griamldi - larger

Jon Bornstein, who led the Griffins to the CIF title, may get a chance to help the US national men’s soccer to a title on a bigger stage. The Los Alamitos resident has been training with the US National soccer team for the past week at the Home Depot Center. Bornstein, the 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year, was invited in December by the US team’s new coach, Bob Bradley, who coached Bornstein last season at Chivas USA.
For day by day entries on the camp can be seen at the mens’ national team page at the US soccer website.

Former Griffin and current Long Beach State soccer player Hayley Bolt continues to accumulate the post-season honors. Bolt (LAHS ’05) was named to the first team All-West Region squad. Bolt’s teammate, Kim Silos, earned second team honors.

Former Griffin Niccole Grimaldi (shown above, right), a starting defender for No. 7 Oklahoma State, collected a pair of quality post-season honors of her own. Niccole Grimaldi, of Rossmoor, was named third team all-Central Region by Soccer Buzz magazine, after leading the Big 12 Conference with nine assists. A few days later she was named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as All-South Region Scholars second team. Grimaldi has a 3.954 GPA in marketing. earned Big 12 all-academic honors for her efforts in the classroom his past season.

ALUMNI WATER POLO: Davidson goal wins it for UCLA in MPSF third place game

Drake earns all-academic honors at Stanford for third time

A gaggle of ex-Griffins making quite the splash in the college water polo poools this past season.
      UCLA redshirt freshman
Scott Davidson (LAHS ’05) capped a fine rookie season by scoring the winning goal in UCLA’s 9-8 overtime win over Stanford in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation third place match on November 28. Davidson, who led Los Al to a CIF championship in Fall 2004, came on strong towards the end of the season for UCLA which finished the season with a 17-6 overall and 6-2 league mark.
Davidson's game-winner against Stanford put a damper on a fine season by former teammate Tyler Drake (LAHS ’03), who led all Stanford scorers this season with 39 goals in 26 games, earned honorable mention All-MPSF honors and also earned conference all-Academic honors for the third time. Drake sported a 3.71 GPA.
Stanford finished the season with a 17-9 record and ranked fourth nationally.

Kevin Bradley (LAHS ’02) scored 22 goals for Long Beach State in a primarily reserve role – although he did start five matches this seaon. Another former Griffin, Tyler Anderson (LAHS ’02), saw limited action as a reserve goalkeeper.
Clayton Snyder (LAHS ’06) had a fine freshman season for the Pepperdine water polo team which finished in a four-way tie for sixth place in the MPSF. But the Waves' lost out on the tiebreaker for one of the top eight seeds for the end of season conference tournament, so their season ended rather abruptly.

In the Life after Div. I college water polo department: Ex-Griffin Jessica Levin is using her egg-beater kick to see the world. Levin (LAHS ’01, LB State ’05) played in the Australian Women’s pro league for five months last Spring and then was recruited with some fellow LB State alums (including Wilson’s Robin Gordin) to play in the Netherlands pro league this fall. As Jessica’s mom, Joanne, said, “Free travel, room and board to live in another country. . .very cool.”

ALUMNI BASKETBALL: Duda scores 22 in UCI's Big West Opener win

Fields seeing good time for Stanford; Brucculeri trying to shake off injury-ridden start
Stephanie Duda

Former Griffin Stephanie Duda (LAHS '03) poured in a career-high 22 points to lead the Anteaters to a 84-73 victory over Cal Poly in the conference opener in SLO last Thursday.
Not only did the Duda's effort help the Anteaters snap a seven-game losing streak and go to 1-0 in the Big West (3-11 overall), but it is the first win in a Big West opener since UCI beat Cal State Fullerton to begin the 2002 league schedule. (And that trivia should win you a couple drinks at a down and out sports bar.)
Duda recorded her league-leading seventh double-double with 11 rebounds to go with her 22 points. Duda was 6-11 from the floor, 10-13 from the line and had a game-high five steals.

Landry Fields, now a freshman at Stanford University, is getting good minutes for the Cardinal basketball squad this season. Last weekend he played 22 minutes in Stanford’s nationally televised 76-75 win over Virginia. Fields, one of the best three-point shooters in SoCal high school ball last season, has struggled with his shot in Stanford’s early games, but his rebounding and defense have kept in in the rotation.
Ironically, one of Field’s best performances so far was an 11-point effort in Stanford’s 71-60 win over Arizona State on Dec, 28. He scored 11 points in 11 minutes in the first half, but only played two and a half minutes in the second half. Stanford, which is 9-4 overall, hosts Washington and Washington State this weekend.

Former Griffin Kyle Brucculeri is working his way back into game shape after missing much of UC Davis' early season with an injury to his non-shooting (left) elbow which he injured during the early portion of preseason practice. Brucculeri, made 63 three-pointers to lead the team and was third in scoring (10.9) and made his three-pointers at a .417 clip.

Ex-Griffin basketball player Alexis Olivier (of College Park East) made the Bruin roster as a walk-on this season and is playing for her mom, UCLA coach Kathy Olivier. UCLA downed Oregon, 77-70, last Sunday to improve its record to 9-9, 3-3 in the Pac-10. The Bruins host cross-town rival USC this Saturday.

DIVING: 14-year old Haley Ishimatsu finishes fourth in synchro world competition

Seal Beach diver qualifies after strong summer showing
Haley Ishimatsu

14-year old Seal Beach diver Haley Ishimatsu fared well at the 2006 FINA Gran Prix Super Final international synchronized diving competition in mid-November, when she and partner Mary Beth Dunnichay finished fourth with 238.08 points in the women's 10-meter synchro category.
The Super Final wraps up the 2006 FINA Grand Prix series, which featured eight international competitions from February-June. Invitations to the Super Final are based on results from those events.
Ishimatsu, who was selected to the national team in 2006, is the younger sister of another local national team diver, Tory Ishimatsu.
Tory won a CIF title as a freshman at Los Al in Spring 2004 but now trains four hours a day for the US national team, with the goal of making the Olympics next year.

AYSO: GU12s all-stars in virtual must-win situation this weekend

Team could have season ended even without ever losing
GU12_all-star

It may be tenuous but at least the Los Al AYSO Region 159 GU12 all-stars hold their destiny in their tiny hands after this weekend’s first round of play in Area E all-star tournament action.
The local 12-sters tied a tough Cypress team 1-1 on Sunday morning, then held off a plucky Whittier squad 2-1 in the afternoon fray. Allie Emmons scored the lone local goal against Cypress while Mallory Strawther and Emmons tallied against Whittier.
The tie and win give Los Al four points, essentially tying them with La Habra (which technically has an edge by virtue of beating Whittier 3-0 Sunday morning before tying Cypress 1-1 in the nightcap.
A Los Al win on Sunday over La Habra clinches first place in their pool and advances them to the afternoon’s semi-final match. A tie keeps them tied with La Habra but puts them at the mercy of tie-breakers (a. fewest goals allowed; most goals scored; differential), most of which are not favorable to Los Al.
The 12’s are still undefeated after two weekends of play. The team closed out 2006 with four wins and a championship at the Hi-5 Tournament in Fountain Valley on Dec. 30-31.
Los Al opened with a 4-2 win over Cypress, sparked by great first half goals from Lea Albers and Jenna Hudson, then followed with wins over Quartz Hill (3-0) and Fountain Valley (5-0, with Emmons scoring two goals in the latter) before facing a much taller and more physical Arcadia squad. After a scoreless first half, Los Al parlayed second half goals by Albers and Kelly Peterson for a 2-0 victory. NOTE: If the other coaches would send me information, I’d be happy to report on their teams. (In fact, send it now, and we'll add it on our AYSO page) Click here for the AYSO Area E results page (which might be informative if they ever update it)
