6, 2006 - Vol 9, Issue 4 |

Greetings,
sports fans and community-minded citizens!
Alright, let’s see --
the first month of school is gone – 2006
is three quarters history -- Griffin sports
teams are doing good – a gaggle of Griffin
alumni are turning in good showings in the
Fall sports (or should that be a covey,
murmuring, or exaltation – I always get my
bird
group plurals confused). But then a Griffin
is only half of a bird – yada yada yada --
The Taste For Los Al
preparations are progressing nicely. More
restaurants than ever before have committed.
Check
out the list. Unfortunately, once again
conspicuously absent are the Old Town Seal
Beach restaurants -- with the exception of Mahe,
the re-located Yucatan
Grill (both of whom have gone above and
beyond the call of duty for the Taste), and
that swinging newcomer, Three-Twenty,
we’ve gotten zilch from the maitre-d’s
of Main Street and Old Town. Come on, guys,
the kids in Old Town attend Los Al High,
too. It's for a good cause -- over $125,000
net was raised last year for Los Al High
booster clubs. And besides it's good
business -- us provincials north of the 405
do eat out -- a lot according to census
demographics. (Of course, that may be
because we can’t cook, but that's for
another forum.) Perhaps, some of these fine
establishments just need a little nudge from
you folks via a phone call or email. Also,
for those who want tickets to the event,
contact your favorite Los Al High Booster
Club.
It’s perhaps a
couple weeks away from critical mass but
there are some very important elections
coming up in November -- the most important
in this community being the one for two
spots on the Los
Alamitos USD school board. The LAUSD
Board not only controls the biggest budget
of any local entity, but controls more
public recreation space than any other
public entity. It also will have the final
say on who will replace Carol Hart, who
will retire as superintendent after this
school year.
Granted, the district is
in a tough spot financially, but a lot of
things can be done with a Board that truly
provides leadership AND taps into the power
of this community by actually allowing it to
be involved. The bottom line is if you
really want to improve the school and
recreation facilities -- and just as
importantly, improve the attitude towards
the improvement and maintenance of these
facilities -- then you better pay attention
to the school board race.
I really haven’t heard
much from the three candidates who are
competing for the two available spots. So I
guess I have some homework ahead of me.
Alright, let’s get
to it . . .

FOOTBALL: Los Al downs Santa
Monica 35-0
|
|
Griffins
win final non-league match in battle
of 3-1 teams
Clark Evans' passing and Chris Soto's
running helped Los Al High conclude
the non-league portion of its football
schedule with a convincing
35-0 win over the Santa
Monica Vikings in a battle of 3-1
teams at Veteran’s Stadium in Long
Beach Thursday night.
Evans, a sophomore
quarterback, completed 12 of 19 passes
for 121 yards and Soto rushed for 113
yards in the victory.
Although the
Griffins lost
to Orange Lutheran 38-27 last
Thursday — that setback may have
been a win in some ways. So as to not
overwhelm his starting sophomore
quarterback , coach John Barnes had
been running a stripped-down,
conservative version of their
sophisticated, wide-open offense. But
the early 21-0 deficit forced the
Griffins to utilize all the elements
of their formerly pass-happy playbook.
Evans responded brilliantly,
completing 8 of 14 passes for 142
yards and rushing for 111 yards
against a very tough Lutheran defense
(and all you 30 Years War fans out
there know from European history how
tough those Lutherans can be).
While perhaps not
the caliber of Orange Lutheran, Santa
Monica, a perennial force in the South
Bay Athletic Association, came into
the game seeming to present a tough
challenge for Los Al as well.
The Vikings had
posted wins over Hueneme
High 40-21, Palisades
48-23, and St. Monica 50-7
(although perhaps not the fairest of
matches as Santa Monica has 3,500
students and St. Monica's has only
580). SaMo's only loss has been a 48-23
setback to LA City power, Venice.
But not only did
Evans, Soto and Co. do an offensive
number on Santa Monica, but the
Griffin defense shutout an offense
that had been averaging 41.5 points
per game.
Los Al opens the
Sunset League season next week on the
road against Fountain Valley.

stretches to score Los Al's first TD
in last week's game.

LOCAL
WOMEN: Passionately Pink For
Tennis
|
|
Seal
Beach Women seek net results to help
Komen Cancer Foundation
Not ones to stand around wasting
valuable time, a group of local women
have formed a tennis team to help
spread the word during National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
which kicked off October 1.
This
year's campaign, called Passionately
Pink for the Cure is sponsored by
the Susan G. Komen Foundation – and
the idea is to see pink everywhere,
every day in October, reminding
everyone of the crucial need to
eradicate breast cancer.
One
local Seal Beach "pinko" is
AnaMaria Bustillo who with partner in
pink Lynn Gosselin has organized a
competitive tennis team that not only
plays USTA matches throughout Orange
County but has parlayed that into
participation in this month's panoply
of pink power.
Bustillo, known to many for her
part-time teaching and librarian
efforts at Oak Middle School as well
as her enthusiastic manner as a
spectator on the athletic fields, said
she was getting tired of looking at
sports from the periphery.
“We
are a good-looking, active, and
aggressive team of passionate women
who wanted to do more than cheer from
the sidelines. Tennis is our outlet,
-- although we probably spend more on
tennis outfits and lessons than on
anything else right now! My goal is to
look good on the courts, have a
competitive record, and experience the
same kind of pressure/passion as our
kids experience on their fields of
choice. It only makes us better
mothers!!!"
The
group is participating in the
Passionately Pink for the Cure
campaign by helping host an event
on October 19 at the Seal
Beach Tennis Center.
“We’re asking everyone to make a
$20 dollar or more donation to the
Susan G. Komen Foundation and to wear
pink tennis attire that day. In
appreciation for your participation,
you will receive a pink Komen Share
the Promise wristband the day of our
event,” said Bustillo. The club and
group will be hosting a ladies doubles
round robin, a light lunch, prizes,
and goodie bags for all our
participants. Pink is the color on and
off the courts!
Those
interested in playing can contact
AnaMaria at ambustillo@gmail.com
or Lynn Gosselin at lgosselin@adelphia.net
with questions.
Space
is limited to the first 30
participants!

YOUTH
BASKETBALL: NJB signups for
2006-07 season close with record
numbers
|
|
Over
500 register to play
Spurred on no doubt by Local Sports
intimidating exhortations to get
your keesters in gear, local parents
hit the internet in record numbers
to sign up their progeny (and
possible prodigies) for the 2006-07 National
Junior Basketball season.
When
the online spigot was turned off
last Sunday night, just under 500
youths had been registered to play
ball this season. While the record
number will cause some scheduling
problems in a community short of gym
space -- all agree it is a good
problem to have.
City
Director Mark Broersma and his crack
staff are already seeking additional
venues to host games.
Even
though a very large group of 8th
graders graduated out of NJB after
last season, their numbers were more
than amply replaced by the addition
of 182 new players who signed up
this year. Those newcomers must show
up this weekend for
tryout/evaluations to be held at Oak
Middle School. Times for the tryouts
are on the NJB
website.
Also
encouraging for the program is that
97 girls have registered to play --
showing continued growth for a
program that had only 5 girls teams
five years ago.
The
rookie and girls teams will be
selected the week of October 18,
while the Boys Divisions I-3 will be
be made the following week after the
usual rounds of sand-bagging, and
desperate requests and
rationalizations for co-coaches
(whose child just happens to be a
top-line player).
The
league also announced that Russ May,
coach of the CIF-champion Los Al
High Griffins basketball team, will
once again host a skills clinic, to
be held Sunday, November 5, 2006 at
Los Alamitos High School. Cost is
$25 (sign up for the clinic when you
register). May and his coaching
staff will conduct the clinic in two
phases: Grades 1-4 will go from
2-4pm, while Grades 5-8 will work
out from 4:30-6:30pm

SPORTS: Griffin Poloists open
Sunset League with win over Edison
|
|
Girls
VB and tennis host Edison in matches
today
Los
Al Griffins boys water
polo team opened their Sunset
League season with an 11-4 win over
Edison. The Griffins also improved
their overall record to 9-4.
Prior
to starting league play, the Griffins
downed "cross-moat" rival LB
Wilson last week (with senior David
Angstadt notching seven goals), then fell
to perennial CIF power Servite 8-7
(with Angstadt scoring three more).
The
Griffins girls volleyball team downed
Edison in straight games (25-14,
25-22, 25-23) Thursday evening to
improve its Sunset League record to
2-0 (16-4 overall). Los Al opened its
league season Tuesday with a 3-0 win
(28-26, 25-23, 25-14) over Marina on
Tuesday.
Against
the Vikings, Los Al was led by Bethany
Keissner and Christine Douglas with
nine kills each. Geena Urango added 8
and Riley Cropper had seven.
The Los
Al girls tennis team also downed
Edison on Thursday, and extended its
league mark to 4-0. The final score of
the match, played at the Seal Beach
Tennis Center, was 16-2.

COLLEGE
COMMITMENTS: Nine Griffin girls
decide on sports life after Los Al
|
|
Wheeler
to head north by Northwestern for
softball
Los Al softball senior standout Jordan
Wheeler has committed to play at
Northwestern
next season. Besides playing
outfield on the Griffins softball
team, Wheeler also plays on the
Worth Firecrackers travel ball team
which reached the finals of the ASA
18-gold (i.e., the best)
division this past summer. Worth,
which plays out of Huntington Beach,
fell
to the OC Batbusters in the
championship game.
On a
tangential note – my specialty --
the Batbusters defeated the
California Cruisers (of La Palma) in
their semi-final game – meaning
that three of the top four teams in
the country hailed from Orange
County. (Once we’re all done
patting ourselves on the back, we
can move on.)
Wheeler is just one of many other
Los Al female senior athletes who
have been able to simplify their
senior years and the chaotic college
application process by committing to
schools already, thanks to their
success in sports.
Griffin volleyballers have at least
three who have committed to Div I
schools. Geena Urango, a
member of the US Junior National
team, has committed to play next
year at USC,
while teammate Riley Cropper
is a UC
Irvine recruit and opposite
hitter Bethany Keisner, will
play for UC
Berkeley next year. Keisner was
named all-tournament at the
top-notch Las Vegas
Tournament-Durango a few weeks ago
and was a recent OC Register Player
of the Week.
Not to be outdone the Griffins girls
soccer team (which already has 10
players playing at Division I
schools) will add five more next
year as the following seniors have
committed to DivI colleges: Lauren
Bennett (Arizona),
Taylor Cole (Cal
Poly SLO), Casey Bay (Pepperdine),
Tori Rocke (Northern
Arizona), and Ginger Sossaman
(Boise
State). Katie Suits has also
committed -- to UC
Berkeley -- but she's a junior
-- and that's a long way off.
And I know I’ve probably
overlooked somebody so please send
those in, so I can sleep at night.

FOOTBALL: Rowlands' return almost
helps Washington State down USC
|
|
Coromelas
11-11 on PATs for SLO, Cason burned
for long passes
Dan
Rowlands – all 290 pounds of
him – returned to the starting
line-up for Washington
State in their close but no
cigar 28-22 loss
to USC last Saturday. Rowlands (LAHS,
'03) missed the previous week
against Stanford with a knee strain.
The
Cougars (3-2) take on Oregon State
this week, which is coached by
former Seal Beach resident Mike
Riley. Riley lived in these
parts when he was an assistant coach
with USC in the mid '90s.
Former Griffin Nick
Coromelas, now kicking for Cal
Poly SLO, is 4-8 on FGs and 11 on
PATs this season. Coromelas (LAHS
'02) was a star defender on the
Griffins 2002 CIF championship
soccer team.
Another ex-Griffin starting for the
Mustangs is Kevin
Van Gorder, (LAHS '01) who plays
on special teams and does the long
snapping.
In
an attempt to turn things around
after two straight conference
losses, Arizona Wildcat players
(including ex-Griffin Antoine
Cason '04) held a players-only
meeting to talk things out. The
'Cats lost
to Washington 21-10 last
Saturday, with Cason getting burned
on a couple long passes, one of the
first times all season that has
happened.
Cason—one of Arizona’s more
engaging players has begun a self-imposed
ban on talking to the media to
help focus on thiis weekend's
upcoming game against UCLA. Arizona
is now 2-3 on the season
Jimmy
Barnes (LAHS '05) has taken
six snaps at Alabama but has not
yet attempted any passes. Most of
Barnes action came in mop-up action
in Bama’s 41-7
romp over over Louisiana-Monroe.

MENS SOCCER: Suits, UCLA down UC
Santa Barbara on national TV

Montemer
scores goal in Westmont tie
Local Danny
Suits (LAHS '06) saw some
national TV prime time action last
night as his UCLA Bruins mens soccer
team downed
UC Santa Barbara 3-1 in a match
televised live on the Fox Soccer
Channel.
With
UCLA sporting a precarious 2-1 lead,
Suits came in for the last ten
minutes of the match to provide some
additional possession skill in the
inside midfield.
Last
week, Suits started the second half
in the Bruins 2-1
OT win over No. 4 Washington
last week and played a good chunk of
minutes in the match which the
Bruins won with 18 seconds left in
the second overtime.
The
Bruins take on San Diego State on
Sunday.
Sammy
Montemer (LAHS ’05) put Westmont
College ahead with a goal in the
74th minute, but The Masters College
managed to tie up the match and put
a serious dent in Westmont
College’s playoff hopes. Westmont
is now 5-4-2 overall but 0-1-2 in
league play. They host San Diego
Christian this Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Bolt named to two
national teams of Week
|
|
Grimaldi,
#13 Oklahoma State down #11 Texas
Sporting a 10-2 record (2-0 in Big
West Conference play) the Long Beach
State 49ers hit the road to play a couple
games against Central Coast foes
UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly SLO.
The
‘Niners – who already have a team
target on their backs as the Big West
pre-season favorite – but now
ex-Griffin Hayley
Bolt will have an individual
bullseye on hers (as if she didn't
already have one) after having been
named the Big
West Player of the Week and making
two
National teams of the Week chosen
by soccer websites.
Bolt’s header flick proved to be the
game winner for Beach in their 3-2 win
over a spirited Cal State Northridge
team last Sunday. Bolt, who leads the
Big West in goals with five, also had
a header assist in Beach's 2-0 win
over Pacific last Friday.
Oklahoma State (Niccole Grimaldi
’04), buoyed by a 2-1
win over No. 11 Texas last week,
takes its highest ranking ever (No.
13) into a pair of Big
12 home games Iowa State and Missouri
this weekend. The Cowgirls are 4-1 and
sit in a tie with Texas A&M atop
the Big 12 standings.
Despite being outshot 21-3, Virginia
Tech (Megan Strawther ’06) came
close against No. 3 Florida State, but
a goal in the 84th minute gave the Seminoles
a 2-1 win last Sunday. Tech played
Clemson to a 0-0 tie on Thursday
night, and will host North Carolina
State on Sunday. Pepperdine
takes a 6-4-2 record as it heads into
this weekend's conference opener
against Loyola Marymount on Sunday.
The Waves hope to put some goals on
the board after suffering consecutive
shutout losses to UCLA (3-0), Utah
(2-0), and UNLV (1-0).

Ex-Griffin
Rob Fraser teaches rugby in
Afghanistan
Here's another nice article in the OC
Register by columnist David Whiting on
local long-distance swimming star, Lynne
Cox (shown right). This is
apparently the first of at least a
two-part series on the former Griffin
(probably the only person in the world
who has swam the English Channel, the
Bering Strait, to
Antarctica, and frolicked with
baby whales off Seal Beach -- as
detailed in her new book "Grayson."
). There is also a link to a video
piece on Cox.
Former Griffin gridder Rob Fraser, now
a Major in the U.S. Army, is trying to
teach
the sport of rugby to soldiers in
the Afghanistan army.
