Greetings!
Local Sports Online? Hey why not? For
various reasons, -- and my inability to meet
a press deadline was actually not one of
them this time -- it seemed like the time
had come for Local Sports to take a trip to
cyber world. The large number of local
sports activities -- youth, high school,
alumni in college, and professional -- made
it difficult to do justice to all the worthy
stories in a limited number of pages every
two weeks. Combine that with the fact that
for whatever reason, the larger local print
media all too often overlooks our little
corner of the county. This first issue is
going out to just over 500 lucky souls with
whom I have had e-mail contact over the past
few years -- either via Local Sports or from
putting together ads for the many sports
programs I've edited and published for many
high school teams. Some of these e-mail
address may no longer be active -- however,
if you're reading this, the odds are your
email address is still working. (Some
addresses may even bounce because this is
being sent through a web-based server so
their e-mail server may think of it as spam.
And that's probably more tech talk than
anybody should be forced to endure.) Anyway,
if you like this, please be my guest and
forward this to somebody you think will find
it interesting -- and maybe even like it and
want to be added to our mailing list.

Ex-Giant
Nenn honored by Giants

Plaque
denotes his 300th major league save
Former LAYB, Los Al Griffin and
major league standout pitcher Robb
Nen was honored this past Sunday
by the San Francisco Giants with a
plaque commemorating his 300th save.
The 36-year old Nenn, at one time
baseball's top relief pitcher, retired
in 2003 after a 10-year career with
the Rangers, Marlins, and Giants.
After growing up in Rossmoor, Nen
played for Los Al from 1985-87.
Ironically, while he pitched a bit,
his innings were limited as he was
considered on the wild side. He now
lives in Dove Canyon down by Rancho
Santa Margarita.

Griffins
clinch CIF baseball playoff spot

Avery,
DeAngelis, and Marmion all get three
hits in 14-10 win
The Los
Al Griffins baseball team
returns to Sunset League play today
with a game at Fountain Valley,
hoping to gain ground on Esperanza
which has a two game lead over Los
Al with four games to go.
The Griffins however did clinch a
CIF playoff spot and ran their
league record
to 8-3 with a wild 14-10
win over Huntington Beach last
Friday. Sophomore Matt Avery,
junior Geno DeAngelis, and
senior Tyler Marmion each had
three hits for Los Al. Travis
Cross picked up the win, and Danny
Farris came in to get the save.
The Griffins defeated Westminster
2-0 in Redondo Tournament non-league
game on Monday at Los Al.

Griffins
down Edison 18-0 to clinch another
Sunset title
Los Al seniors Cory Harris and
Marc Vartebedian made an impressive
run through the Ojai Tennis
tournament that saw them reaching
the high school division doubles
finals, where they unfortunately
fell to Santa Barbara's Christopher
Ho and Billy Grokenberger, 6-2, 6-4.
The effort earned them OC Register tennis
athlete of the week honors.
The Griffins returned to Sunset
league play action on . Going into
last week they were tied
with Fountain Valley (both with
5-1 records), but since nobody
turned in the scores to the the
papers or anyone else, it has made
our job difficult. However, we do
know Los
Al shut out Edison 18-0 on
Monday to clinch yet another league
championship -- about the 17th or
18th in a row (but who's counting?).
