Groundbreaking ceremony for new all-weather track at Los Al

A giant step in a process that began over 12 years ago was made yesterday afternoon when the Los Al School District held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new lighted all-weather track and synthetic turf athletic complex on the Los Al HS site. Despite some challenges posed by the existing baseball field and the student parking lot, the new facility, which will cost over $4 million, will feature a nine lane track (each lane 42″) and the interior field will be 73 yards wide, wide enough to accommodate a soccer field 70 yards in width. Six stands of lights will be part of the construction which is scheduled to be completed in early November. Participating in the ceremony were Superintendent Sherry Kropp, Deputy Superintendent Patty Meyer, members of the Los Al School Board, Los Al HS administration and coaches, representatives from Los Alamitos and Seal Beach and some members of the community. The ceremony was the latest step in a process that began back in 2000 when then Los Al track coach and athletic director Cary Brody asked Local Sports editor Larry Strawther to put together a group of people he thought were doers in the community. From that meeting [...]

Five Los Al Griffins boys water polo players earned post-season honors on the All-Sunset league team. The Griffin award winners were led by senior Chandler Jarrells who made the all-Orange County team, all-CIF and all-Sunset League. Jarrels missed most of his junior season with a back injury but came back to score 111 goals and help Los Alamitos reach the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals, where it fell to Loyola of Los Angeles. Jarrels also was selected to the U.S. team for first-ever FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships (18-and-under) in Perth late last year. Joining Jarrels on the all-Sunset league first team were fellow seniors Max Merrill and Luke Weiser. A fourth senior, Andrew Reynolds, earned second team honors. he was joined by junior Kenneth Keller. SUNSET LEAGUE Coach of the year: Robert Lynn, Newport Harbor Player of the year: Dan Stevens, Newport Harbor, Sr. First Team Curtis Fink (Newport Harbor, Sr.); Preston Lee (Newport Harbor, Sr.); Andrew Silvers (Newport Harbor, Sr.); Chandler Jarrels (Los Alamitos, Sr.); Max Merrill (Los Alamitos, Sr.); Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Sr.); Jovan Jeremic (Huntington Beach, Sr.); Alex Wolf (Huntington Beach, So.); Justin Harrison (Edison, Jr.); Troy Oates (Edison, Jr.); Dalton Kenefick (Fountain Valley, [...]

ALUMNI BB: Former Griffin Alex Mallari playing pro ball in Phillipines

Former Griffin Alex Mallari, who helped lead Los Al to a couple Sunset League championships, was the third overall pick in the draft for the Phillipines Professional Basketball League and has been seeing 10-15 minutes a game so far into the season. Mallari, who played his college ball at Fullerton JC, Cal State East Bay and then one year at Lewis-Clark State in Idaho was picked by the Petron Blaze Boosters in the selection which was held August 19, at the Robinson’s Place Midtown Mall in Ermita, Manila. Mallari had sat out a couple years before deciding to go to the Philippines. He played last season in the nation’s D-League and helped lead the Big Chill to the title, earning a lot of fans and attention in the process. He is the son of Val and Dana Mallari who live in Los Alamitos. Petron Blaze (known as the San Miguel Beermen for most of its existence) has been a member of the Philippine Basketball Association since its inception in 1975 and has won the most PBA titles with 19 — despite the league being down for a few years due to a revolution or two. The team is owned by [...]

PREP BB: Griffins re-loading but still set sights on 10th straight Sunset League title

Despite a high departure rate through graduation, high expectations still abound for this year’s edition of the Los Alamitos Boys basketball team which begins its 2012-13 season this week with action at the Cerritos/Gahr Tournament. The high expectations should be no surprise for a program that has won nine straight Sunset League championships (and fifteen in the last sixteen years), not to mention two CIF-SS championships, despite having to reload many times in that process. Coach Eddie Courtemarche, who as a player was part of three of those championship teams (1998-99, 99-2000, 2000-01) begins his third year as the head coach of the Griffins, and brings back six seniors, led by three-year Varsity guard Wes Mitter and co-captains Paul Kadletz and James Noble. Mitter, a three-year member of the Varsity, has been one of the school’s top three-point shooters, but will have to assume most of the point guard duties as well this season. Although playing a limited role in the Griffins’ small, up-tempo system last season, the 6-6 Kadletz got lots of valuable experience that should pay dividends this year, and Noble always turned in great defense coming off the bench, as did guard Darren Kusmoto. The latter two [...]

FOOTBALL: Griffins make CIF playoffs, face La Habra

They ended the season with two losses that repeated much of the bad from last season – a blow out loss to Huntington Beach and another squeaker loss to Newport Harbor – but the Los Al Griffins football team received a wild card berth in the Southwest Division CIF Playoffs and will try not to repeat their recent one-and-out CIF appearances. The Griffins finished in fourth place with a 2-3 Sunset League record, but their overall 6-4 mark got them a wild card spot good enough to earn them a date at La Habra, champions of the Freeway League, this Friday night. That berth might have seemed questionable after the team finished the season with two disappointing losses. Two weeks ago, the Griffins were destroyed by Huntington Beach 28-7, and last Thursday they gave up a late lead and fell in overtime to longtime nemesis Newport Harbor, 31-28. Despite the late losses a playoff run by the Griffins is a possibility, if they can get that first-round win, something they haven;t been able to do since 2006. While injuries to key people have definitely hurt, the Los Al defense had been solid all season before hitting rough times near the [...]

12th Taste for Los Al again delivers on food and fundraising for Griffin boosters

Almost 2400 people enjoyed the dining fare of 40 local restaurants at the 12th Annual Taste for Los Al which was held on October 20, once again in the back parking lot at the Shops at Rossmoor. The event, the single largest fundraiser for activities at Los Alamitos High School, raised over $220,000 (gross) via ticket sales, raffles and the silent auction, which this year featured over 80 tables of merchandise and offers. 23 high school activities participated in the Taste this year – from big groups like football, baseball and vocal music to small groups such as tennis, golf and jazz band, as well as the newest Griffin activity, ice hockey. One of the main attractions for The Taste is that it gives small activities a chance to compete for funds on an equal playing field with large booster groups. The small group also keeps $25 of for each $45 ticket they sell, but sometimes more importantly, their raffles and silent auction items have equal access to the wallets of the guests brought in by the larger groups. Softball, a sport with only about 40 participants, was once again the leader in ticket sales, selling over 400, which brought [...]

GIRLS VB: Griffins down Huntington Beach 3-1

Win sets up first-round showdown with Newport Harbor on Wednesday The Los Alamitos Girls volleyball team, improved their Sunset League record to 4-0 and overall mark to 22-3 with a 3-1 win over at Huntington Beach Monday evening. The win sets up a first-round showdown with league rival Newport Harbor at Los Al on Wednesday. The Sailors, who fell to the Griffins in the CIF-Southern Section finals last season, also bring a 4-0 league record into the match, and ar 14-5 on the season.. Against the Oilers the Griffins were again led by junior Crissy Jones with 19 blocks. Jones is one of the top middle blockers in the nation, but Griffin coach Dave Huber again used her as a right side hitter, and had junior Savannah Nieman and senior Ella Johnson sharing the middle duties. Johnson responded with a season-high 12 kills. Outside hitter Annie Hale notched 14 kills for the Griffins. In a preliminary match the Griffin JVs improved their season record to 20-0 with by sweeping Huntington Beach 2-0 (25-19, 30-28).

HS GOLF: Lee’s 31 not enough as Marina edges Los Al, 218-219

Esther Lee took honors with a round of 31, but the Los Al girls golf team fell to Marina 218-219 as the two teams opened the second half of Sunset League play. Lee notched five birdies in the nine-hole match on the front nine at Meadowlark Golf Course, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Vikings, who fell to Los Al in the first round of league play. The Griffins drop to 3-3 in league play and 6-7 overall. Marina improves to 4-2. The Griffins next match is on Thursday against first place Edison (5-1). But the Griffins will play without Lee who will be traveling to Oklahoma City to play in the Ping Invitational.
